I finally
saw it. I finally saw Bella, the movie
that has invoked so much controversy, the film that is making liberals foam at
the mouth. An independent endeavor,
produced by conservatives, Bella nevertheless won the Toronto Film Festival,
not known for any favorable views of the right.
The
accusation from the left? Bella has a
Pro-Life agenda. Look, I don’t know what
agenda the studio or writers had. I do
know that the film did absolutely no moralizing about the subject of
abortion. Instead, it showed a woman
choose to keep her baby rather than aborting it. Now, why exactly should such a decision
concern anybody? I thought this was all
about choice. Isn’t that what we always
hear? “We aren’t Pro- Abortion. We are Pro-Choice. All we want is for women to be allowed to
make an informed choice.”
I see. So
why get all bent out of shape over a movie that shows a woman make the choice
of keeping her baby?
Bella was
artfully made with heart and warmth. I
strongly encourage everybody to see the film.
Again, there is no visible agenda but it wouldn’t have bothered me if
there had been. Almost all dramas have an agenda. The message of the writer is the agenda. Does the left honestly mean to imply that we
don’t see Pro-Choice agenda movies coming out of Hollywood? Give me a break. In Hollywood, any Pro-Life character
either has horns and a pitchfork or he comes around at the end of the movie
realizing that abortion must be protected because it is mostly sought by women
who have been raped or whose lives would be in danger if the fetus was spared. Of course the amount of abortions performed
for those kinds of reasons are so few they don’t even show up as a whole
percentage point. But you’ll never hear
that in Hollywood. Remember The
Cider House Rules? Was it accused of
having an agenda? No, it was nominated
for Best Picture of the Year.
For
anyone on the left to accuse others of an agenda would be funny if it weren’t
so tragic.
This is
Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
