Peace In The Middle East? I believe in the Tooth Fairy Too

The news this week is huge!  The potential is tremendous: Peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians!  This could be the greatest thing since Chamberlain met with Hitler.  I’ve been so excited; I can hardly sleep at nights.

Never mind the previous peace talks, so many now they can barely be numbered any more. Never mind that, generally speaking, the day after
Israel makes a deal with the Palestinians, she’s attacked or terrorized. Never mind that in 1948 the Palestinians were offered a two state solution and they rejected it, opting instead for the total annihilation of Israel.  Never mind that this was also the stated goal of the other surrounding Middle East countries, who constantly butt into this “problem” taking their own personal interest in the “peace talks.” Never mind that the “occupied territory” was land taken by Israel in defense when a bunch of nations declared war on her in 1967. Never mind that everything we call “occupied territory” today and everything we call Jordon and everything we call Israel was all promised to the Jews under the Balfour Declaration early in the Twentieth Century.  Never mind that behind the backs of the Jews, 75 percent of this land was sold to the Arabs.  Never mind that the remaining 25 percent was going to be split between the Jews (who figured a sliver of the promise was better than nothing at all) and the Palestinians (who, as stated already, rejected the deal).  Never mind that in their democratic` election, the Palestinians put the terrorist organization, Hamas into power. Never mind that after Israel gave back the Gaza Strip, missiles were fired from Gaza into Israel.  Never mind the fact that Israel doesn’t show up on maps in Palestinian schools and that little five year old Palestinian children are taught to hate Jews in kindergarten classes and Sesame Street type TV shows.  Never mind that America, under George Bush, says she refuses to have relations with any country that harbors terrorism and then we turn around and force Israel to do the very thing we will not do.  Never mind that the only “peace agreements” in the past have asked Israel to give back land but have never asked the Palestinians to do a cotton picking’ thing except promise to stop murdering Jews, a promise they break every time anyway.

Never mind all that!  You don’t want to be a pessimist, do you?   I’m sure this will be a conference for the history books, a defining moment in time that provides peace and tranquility for all.  What a jubilee!  It brings a smile to my face and a pace to my step.  Oh, happy days are here again.

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
