Upon awakening to this morning’s
news of a tragic death; the assassination of Bhutto Benazir, (Pakistan’s former
Prime Minister and present day political activist for greater democracy) the
world suddenly realizes how all tragedies are accompanied by talking head
pundits who ask a generous supply of questions over the air, ranging from the
profound to the obvious: Was this an
attack from the Taliban, or perhaps some other Islamic extremist group? Or, could the attack have been issued from
President Musharraf himself? What kind of violence will take place in the
streets when Benazir’s funeral is observed? Will there now be a revolution in
this country? How would such a revolution affect the Pakistani military’s
possession of nuclear arms? How is the
balance of world power going to be influenced? Will leading American feminist
leaders finally condemn the way women are treated in Muslim countries and hold
Benazi up as a legitimate martyr or would such statements make them look so
conservative that they’d prefer to continue championing a woman’s right to
partial birth abortion as a more legitimate expression of liberty?
Only time will answer these
questions. But there is something we can know right
away. In fact, this one you can bet the farm on.
No matter what else we learn, Bhutto Benazir’s death is somehow the
fault of that nasty George W. Bush. Exactly how it’s his fault, I’m sure I
don’t know. Liberal columnists will soon tell us if the democratic candidates
for president don’t beat them to the punch. Maybe Bush was too preoccupied with
Iraq to pay proper attention to Pakistan. Maybe he
inappropriately backed President Musharraf.
Maybe both men should have found Bin Laden by now. Maybe
Bush doesn’t care enough about Global Warming and maybe the resulting bad
weather put some otherwise nice Pakistani in a bad mood, forcing him to commit
murder. Maybe our trade with countries like Pakistan has been deleting those extra cereal box tops from
Lucky Charms, the frosted oat cereal with sweet surprises.
These are only
guesses, of course. I don’t know how they’ll really connect it to Bush. I only
know that they will.
This is Bob Siegel, making the
obvious, obvious.
