Hold
on to your seats. I’m about to defend Obama and this will probably
be the one and only time: Let’s give Obama a break. He says he
isn’t guilty of plagiarism. He says his friend gave him
permission to
borrow ideas for that latest speech. So be it. I’m perfectly content to
critique the speech itself.
In response to Hillary’s accusations that her opponent is offering mere
words and not ideas, Obama quoted a litany of popular, life changing phrases,
spoken from the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and John F.
Kennedy. Those were good phrases all
right. I would like to point out however, that when such men spoke, their words
actually meant something. People, for
the most part, voted for them because of their ideas, not their charisma.
Take Kennedy’s words: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what
you can do for your country.”
Important words, to be sure. But when Obama occasionally articulates an idea
of his own, it seems to be along the lines of promises about what bigger
government can do for you! It seems to
contradict the very words he quotes.
This is because, unlike his brother, Ted, if John Kennedy were alive
today he would just as soon see Kermit the Frog elected before voting for
Obama.
This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
