What happened was a miracle. With all due respect to the parting of the Red Sea, this seemed a bigger miracle, something I could not possibly have imagined.

When my mother returned from her shopping, she sat down next to me and said, “I appreciate the gesture you have made. The truth is, I don’t think your father would take you back now no matter what you did. As for giving up church, all of your friends are Christians now and I don’t want you to give up your friends.  If you want to do something for me, there’s a place in Berkley called the Shabbat House. If you would go to one of their weekend retreats and speak with the rabbis, I would appreciate it. But that is all I’m going to ask of you.”

What a testimony to the mercy of God! Here I was, the victim of a false, legalistic teaching.  In fact, let’s not mince words: It was a stupid teaching! Nevertheless, God understood my predicament. He knew I could leave no stone unturned. He knew I had to be sure in my heart that I was doing the right thing and He honored my wishes.
