Well, it had to happen sooner or later! Obama, the man who claims
to be running on the platform of bringing people together, has decided
to play the race card. What a surprise! I've been in a state of
shock ever since I heard the news. Of course, the genius of this
whole thing is that he managed to play this card by accusing McCain of playing the card.
When it comes to campaign strategy, Obama is quite smart and extremely
clever. He does not seem to hold this aptitude for world affairs but
with elections, nobody can even come close.
Although people are talking as though this were a recent development,
Obama actually introduced race into the election a few weeks back. At
that time, he was not talking about McCain specifically, bur rather
Republicans in general. He did it as a sort of prediction. He said that
instead of discussing the issues, they would speak against having a
black man as President. Never mind that no prominent Republican was
doing any such thing. Neither were they hearing Obama talk much about
issues, except that he promised to bring change.
Obama was severely criticized for that remark. But lately, he's been
slipping in the polls and this may have been his reason for playing the
race card once again. When a man is slipping, a man plays his trump
cards. Such is the nature of life. But it had to be different this
time. This time, he had to say it, yet make it sound like he wasn't
saying it. In other words, he had to say it like a politician.
That way, if it backfired again, he could always deny what he said.
Obama has gotten very good at this. One could make a list of things he
said but did not actually mean.
So this time, he responded to McCain's ad, which compared Obama to
media superstars like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. He found this a
very insulting ad. Hey Obama, I have a flash for you! People are
following you like a celebrity and expecting the same substance from
you that they would expect from a celebrity, nothing! The ad
couldn't possibly have been more true. And all campaigns are negative.
Who are we kidding? One cannot run against an opponent without
bringing attention to his weaknesses. This has always been true and
this always will be true so you might as well stop the bellyaching.
There is nothing wrong with criticizing an opponent. If a man is not
fit to be president, the country has a right to know. As for McCain
being unwilling to debate the issues, he has challenged you to town
hall meetings time and again, to have real debates and you have
refused. That's what a debate is, facing your opponent and giving
unscripted answers instead of rehearsed sound bites. A real
debate is not a performance. You know what I mean by performance? I mean the kind of stuff Britney Spears and Paris Hilton do!
Anyway, while insisting that McCain cannot debate the "real issues,"
Obama suggested that McCain's problem was that his opponent didn't look
like the presidents on our dollar bills. Do you see the beauty of
this remark? First of all McCain said no such thing. McCain merely
talked about Obama's celebrity status. Second of all, Obama actually
didn't use the words race or color,
even though any thinking person realizes that this was the translation
of the comment. Taking the bait, McCain's spokespeople said they were
disappointed that Obama had played the race card. Obama quickly
responded: "We didn't play the race card. McCain did!" See how it
works? Obama brings race into the dialogue. McCain complains that
race was brought into the dialogue. McCain is then reprimanded for
mentioning race, even though the only thing he mentioned about race was
that race should not be mentioned.
This is an absolute outrage. McCain has bent over backwards to not
speak negatively of Obama and he has done so to a fault. He has
criticized several public figures for defending him in ways that seemed
too negative and in doing so, he alienated the very people who were trying to help him. It didn't matter. He
was going to be accused of racism no matter what he did. It was
"in the cards" if you'll forgive the pun. By the way, has Obama been
running a positive campaign? I mean even before this latest
strategy? All he has had to say about McCain was that he would be
four more years of Bush. I'm sure he meant that in the kindest, most
endearing way, given all the sinister descriptions he has supplied for
our current president. Never mind. Democrats are never negative and
Democrats are never divisive. Democrats are just Democrats.
To be fair, there are a myriad of meanings behind this "presidents on
dollar bills remark." I'm sure Obama had no intention to imply
that his skin color is what distinguished him from the other
presidents. He must have meant that unlike Washington, he doesn't wear
a wig or unlike Lincoln he doesn't wear a beard. Or he might have
meant that all of our dollar bills are green and he isn't green
colored. Or maybe he thought he was being compared to the one-eyed pyramid on the back of the bill. Oh wait! All of those
things are true of McCain as well. Hmm..I guess we just need to trust
him. Even though we will never figure out, this side of heaven, what
that remark meant, it certainly did not mean race. Obama would never
make such a comment, even though a few weeks ago he did make exactly
that comment! Don't dwell on on the past. You must still vote for
Obama. You want change, don't you? Now in addition to being about
change, Obama is also about bills!
I don't know of anyone who is concerned for Obama being an
African-American. If that subject relates, it is only with the
depressing observation that many will vote for the man precisely because
he is African-American. Some of us are still old fashioned enough to
think a candidate should be chosen because of the issues. Does not
Obama himself say this again and again? But then, his wife can say she
is proud of our country because an African-American is doing so well in
the race. Oh no, they aren't bringing up race. Not at all!
Speaking for myself, I can think of many African-Americans who would
make great presidents and I would be proud to have them. Obama, my
problem with you is not your skin color. My problem with you, is your
incompetent grasp of world affairs, your desire to appease ruthless
dictators, your refusal to drill for oil even though our economy is on
the brink of ruin, your desire to bring home our troops even when the
job is not finished, your racist pastor, whose church you attended for
20 years and whose sermon you named a book after, your terrorist friend
Bill Ayers, your back-pedaling and flip flopping on practically every
issue, your support of legislation that would quell free speech, your
Socialistic agenda toward mandatory redistribution of wealth, your
support for reparations, and....I could go on but I would end up
writing a phone book rather than a blog.
Oh, and one more thing, Obama. If you don't want us to criticize your
wife's speeches, then ask your wife to stop giving speeches. She can
say anything she wants about America but it is off limits to respond to
her? You can say anything you want about race but it is off
limits for McCain to respond to you? Are these your rules? You
are a joke! That is, you are a joke for now. If you win the
election, you will be a nightmare, not because you are black but
because you are YOU.
