A Woman's Right To Choose, Unless She is Choosing Something Other Than An Abortion

I have a question for my feminist friends. (And I do actually have some feminist friends, believe it or not.) How come more feminists aren't rushing to the side of Carrie Prejean (alias Miss California)?

I thought one of the pillars of feminism today is "a woman's right to choose?"  Does that only apply to abortion? Not that I believe in abortion and I suspect Carrie Prejean does not either. Having said that, when another life is not at stake (like the baby inside who also deserves some choice) the concept of a right to choose in and of itself is an idea most of us would resonate with.   There seems to be something just a tab bit disingenuous about a movement that will rally for a woman's right to choose and then not support her choice when she chooses to have an opinion that is anything other than Politically Correct.

Carrie is being hailed as a hero by many. Others, (including the officials of the Miss California pageant) are encouraging her to "tone it down" a bit.  I have to wonder if Miss Prejean would be asked to tone it down had she merely smiled at the judge and said, "I want to work to promote world peace."

She would have sounded less like a feminist, less like a woman of power and more like a Valley Girl twit. Nobody would have known exactly what she meant, or how a beauty contest winner was going to convince the likes of Hugo Chavez, Kim Jon Ill, Ahamadennejad, or Hamas to work toward world peace. Still, I am convinced that if she gave that meaningless answer, nobody would be asking her to "tone it down."

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
