Sometimes movements outlive their usefulness. This is because the objective is accomplished but certain people choose to keep the cause going for any one of a number of reasons: Perhaps it is the pride and prestige associated with a feeling of importance. Perhaps the new leader is a rebel without a cause, the kind of personality who will never be satisfied. And then, since so few individuals ever learn how to think, any loud, passionate, charismatic figure will always have a following. Allow me to list three human rights movements which all began legitimately, accomplished their original stated purposes, and then refusing to fold, demanded a whole host of new rights and/or created untrue, discriminatory, bigoted teaching of their own. As the saying goes, "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely."
1) The Civil Rights Movement:
Good things the Civil Rights movement originally stood for:
-The obvious need to abolish slavery and segregation
-The right of African-Americans to vote
-Laws forbidding unequal housing, hiring, or payment policies due to a person's skin color
-Ending the racist teaching that white people are superior to black people
What the Civil Rights movement has morphed into:
-Reverse discrimination due to Affirmative Action
-Teaching that
all white people are racists, and that
only white people are racists, therefore African-Americans (indeed all people of color) are actually superior to all white people
-Demanding reparations for slavery in which land redistribution and special taxes on white people will "finally make right" the damage done by slavery
Where I believe the Civil Rights Movement is headed:
-Some extremists will actually insist that until white Americans are the slaves of black Americans for 200 years, we can never be square.
NOTE: Far fetched as that sounds, we are living in an age where nothing ought to surprise us.
2) The Feminist Movement:
Good things the Feminist Movement originally stood for:
-Fair hiring and equal pay for women
-The right of women to vote
-Ending the ridiculous teaching that men are superior to women
-Allowing a woman to marry whomever she pleases or remain single should she please
-Allowing women as well as men to file for divorce in cases where divorce is truly appropriate
What the Feminist Movement has morphed into:
-Reverse discrimination due to Affirmative Action
-Failure to speak out for the most persecuted women in the world, Muslim women, due to the designation of Islam as a Politically Correct religion
-Teaching that women are superior to men
-Teaching that men are all pigs
-In some cases, teaching in college classrooms that all men are rapists. Even husbands, when having sex with their wives, are not truly loving them, but rather, raping them.
The Gay Rights Movement:
Good things the Gay Movement originally stood for:
NOTE: Although, as a Christian, I cannot condone the practice of homosexuality, we do live in a democratic society where Christians and non-Christians share certain rights as citizens. However, since we are talking about a practice rather than a race or a gender, I do not believe all of the same rights apply. Here are some that
do apply:
-Abolishing legal codes that outlaw homosexuality
-Fair hiring and equal pay for homosexuals (Exceptions: churches, due to freedom of religion, the military, or any job with children in which the homosexual wants to insist on his right to stand before the kids and make an issue out of his/her sexual preference)
What the Gay Rights Movement has morphed into:
-Insisting that the entire country change the definition of marriage
-Name calling and demonizing of anyone who will not affirm their lifestyle
-An agenda seeking to make it against the law to speak ill of homosexuality
-Teaching that homosexuality is just as normal as heterosexuality
Where I believe the Gay Rights Movement is headed:
-Teaching that homosexuality is actually the norm and
heterosexuality is abnormal
-Success in abolishing free speech under the guise of extended Hate Crime legislation (i.e. Like laws already existing in Canada)
