Rarely do I get a chance to blog so quickly after breaking news: There has been a shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas. 12 people are already dead with another 3 wounded. We do not yet know much about the identity of the shooter, except that he too, is a solder (or at least was in a soldier's uniform) and he has already been taken out by authorities.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims, but I do find myself suspecting that this will be the only news story we see for the rest of the evening by our "24 hour" news networks. This concerns me because it will eclipse another major news story. Undoubtedly, you heard about the many conservative protesters descending upon Washington today in an attempt to get the attention of an out of control congress about to push through a health care bill that few Americans want. OK, normally that story (which has been going on all summer) can wait in the wake of more critical news, but are you aware that Nancy Pelosi already had 12 of these protesters arrested on the charge of being on private property? Probably not. Neither are you likely to hear much more about it today.
Nothing is sadder or more senseless then the death of innocents. But the media's fascination with the morbid subsequent decision to trump all other reports makes me sick to my stomach.
