On Sunday, December 27th, I will be out of town visiting my son for the holidays. The Bob Siegel Show will air a repeat broadcast of our annual Christmas special (first presented in 2007) in which I (along with co-host Laurie Lewis) interview Sylvia Lange, niece of Hugh Martin. Even if the name, "Hugh Martin" does not sound familiar to you, I guarantee, you know his work. He is the composer and lyricist for the classic MGM musical, Meet Me In St. Louis, featuring, among other popular songs, one of the most beloved carols of all time, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Led to Christ years later while recovering in a hospital room, Mr. Martin re-wrote his own lyrics retitling it; Have Yourself A Blessed Little Christmas. On the radio, Sylvia sings this new version and two other Christmas pieces. She also shares her own testimony; how she turned from a lucrative career to better serve Jesus.
Sylvia Lange is an accomplished gospel singer in her won rite, often mixing music with public speaking on her tours. Of course, Laurie Lewis (who sang with a revised Mamas and the Papas) also has a sensational voice and does the best version of God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen I've ever heard.
Since this special will air two days after Christmas (and since it is already in my archives, having broadcast before) I am sending the link now, as some of you may enjoy it more before Christmas Day. On the other hand, even if you can't get to it until a day or two later, you're not one of those people who take down your tree and turn off the music one day after the 25th, are you? If so, beware: You may just get visited by three Christmas ghosts that night:)
Merry Christmas
