Bible Questions From Skeptics Are Answered

On this week's BOB SIEGEL SHOW:

The high majority of the program deals with some good but extremely skeptical questions about the Bible, sent to me from a man in the United Kingdom.

Questions include:

-If God can do anything, can He create a rock so big even He can't move it?
-Since the Bible says the world is only 6,000 years old, how do we reconcile that with the fossil record?
-Why did God kill people in the Old Testament simply because they didn't respect Him?
-Wasn't the New Testament written hundreds of years after Jesus died, and isn't it true that the original gospels said nothing about a resurrection?

This program originally broadcast on 12-20-09 and can now be downloaded from www.bobsiegel.net.

"God Led Me To Say This To You, So Maybe You'd Better Listen."

" I feel the Holy Spirit is telling us that there is something wrong with the worship."

"God seems to be leading me to find a different church."

"Brother, I don't mean to sound confrontational, but I want you to know that the Lord specifically told me to share these things with you."

If you have been a Christian for very long, those phrases probably sound far too familiar. Look, I believe that God can talk to us and I believe God wants to talk to us. (See link to article below.)  But I must also be honest: I am of the opinion that the high majority of the time when Christians talk about God's leading, God did not say a word to them, not one single peep. Christians are notorious for putting words in poor God's mouth and human beings, as a species, tend to have difficulty taking responsibility for their own actions. When they become Christians, they think there is now a license to shroud their decisions in spirituality.

The Bible encourages us to consider people who claim to have a word from God, but we are also commanded to test the spirits (1 John 4:1, 1 Cor 14).

Although certainly Scripture provides examples of God speaking in a variety of ways, generally, when a man in the Bible claimed God talked to him, he meant it literally. He actually heard an audible voice coming out of the sky. That is not what my fellow Christians tend to mean today when they joyfully proclaim that "God led them to do something." Usually they mean they have a very strong feeling about something. Since they know that the promised Holy Spirit lives inside of them, they automatically assume that any feeling they get comes from Him, especially if it is a powerful emotion. Yes, such emotions can come from the Spirit, but again, we are to bring them before the church for testing rather than being immediately presumptuous.

Years ago when I was doing campus ministry at UCSB, one of my students insisted that God had told him to marry his girlfriend. The problem is, somehow Lamby Pie didn't get the same message.

"When you say that God spoke to you, " I asked, "Do you mean you heard an audible voice?"

He laughed. "No, not an audible voice!"

"Well what then? " I thought it was a fair question.

"I just knew."

"But she doesn't know."

As humans, we are capable of having many different kinds of overwhelming feelings. What this guy was trying to say was that he was in love and he just couldn't imagine such a thing happening to his heart if God were not a part of it.

Likewise, the person protesting worship probably just doesn't like the kind of music playing or the style of singers or the assortment of instruments in the band. Music is extremely emotional. Music is also a matter of taste. Or maybe he means that the congregation is not lifting up their hands or exhibiting other posture that he deems as the true litmus test of genuine worship.

As for your friends who feel led to confront you; Let's be honest. As people, we tend to be very opinionated and in our conceit it is difficult to imagine that our own opinion is not God's.

I think many will be surprised on judgment day to discover that God did not say a lot of the things they thought He did. They may also discover that He tried to say one or two things they were not paying any attention to.

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.

The Vault of "Tolerance" is Opened Up Once Again

Peter Vadala accidentally discovered a way to rise from the obscurity of an ordinary Massachusetts salesman at the Logan Airport branch of Brookstone.

It seems a fellow co-worker continually spoke with Peter about her engagement to another woman. Not wanting to be rude, but not wanting to come across as endorsing something that violates his Christian convictions either, he tried at first to change the subject.

"But she brought it up three more times during the day," Vadala explained. "After the fourth time she told me about her plan to marry her partner, I told her, "I think homosexuality is bad stuff."

OK. That's not the most tactful way to say it and that's not the way I would have said it. But this followed several attempts to simply avoid the conversation and (bottom line), the man should be allowed to say whatever he wants because we are supposed to be living under a constitution which guarantees freedom of speech. Vadala does claim there was no disrespect in his tone even though the woman piped forth, "You keep your opinions to yourself?"

Was she keeping her opinion to herself? That's a question no one would dare pose.

Vadala was promptly fired. His letter of termination accused him of "harassment."  His comments were characterized as "inappropriate and unprofessional." He was also charged with "imposing his beliefs upon others."

Hmm..I don''t suppose firing a man for his beliefs would constitute "imposing your belief on others." Naw!!!!

Talking heads are already suggesting that Vadala  did not need to bring up the subject of homosexuality. Are they not paying attention, or are they simply in cowardly denial?  He didn't bring it up! She did!  Four times.

Vadala also used this opportunity to share about his early days at Brookstone, how he was taken through an orientation that included affirmation of the gay lifestyle. During the sensitivity video, Brookstone employees learned that since homosexual marriage is legal in Massachusetts, nobody has a right to be offended by it. Perhaps this would be a suitable time to remind everyone: We were told many times during the Proposition 8 debate in California that allowing gay marriage will not infringe upon the rights of others. Indeed, we were accused of fear mongering and lying to even suggest such a thing. If that is so, why does the fact that gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts suddenly mean that nobody is allowed to be offended by it anymore?

Oh yes, Brookstone claims to be an atmosphere of diversity. But then, in case you have forgotten, "diversity" today never means diversity of ideas. Neither does "tolerance" mean that one is allowed to disagree with anything Politically Correct. Peter Vadala was shown about as much tolerance as an alligator shows some poor, unfortunate duck accidentally landing on his head.

Expert On Islam Claims It Is Not a Religion of Peace

On this week's Bob Siegel Show, film maker and best selling author, Caryl Matrisciana is a well known expert on ancient and modern world religions, contemporary cults, paganism and the occult. Best selling author, researcher, and commercial artist, Caryl has co-produced or contributed research and expertise toward more than 60 documentaries in the past 30 years.

-Caryl begins by commenting on how Christianity is forbidden teaching in the public schools while other religions are embraced. She mentions the strong Harry Potter influence sanctioned by our public institutions. Although personally, I have never had a problem with the Harry Potter books as fiction, I was surprised to hear that the IRS has granted tax exempt status to a new Harry Potter religion!

-Caryl continues by sharing her testimony, how she grew up in India, befriending many Muslims, Hindus and other faiths, how she got caught up into the spiritualism and drug culture of the 60's, and eventually came out of it by giving her life to Jesus Christ.

-Caryl comments on the popular notion that all religions are true, explaining how that cannot possibly be.

-Finally, the last third of our program is dedicated to Islam and the recent shooting at Ft. Hood. Caryl offers conclusive proof that the Koran is not a peaceful book. Although nominal Muslims may not understand the Koran (and therefore live sincerely peaceful lives) the Koran itself does indeed command Jihad.

A Sign of the Times: As In A Billboard

A couple of days ago, I was interviewed by The San Diego Union-Tribune for the purpose of responding to an atheist sponsored billboard.  Here is a brief excerpt from their article of Thursday Nov. 12:

“Don’t Believe in God?” the billboard asks atop a background of blue sky and white clouds. “You are not alone.”

We hope the message will get everyone thinking,” said Debbie Allen Skomer, coordinator of the San Diego Coalition of Reason, an umbrella organization for nine groups of nonbelievers. “Some people will have a negative reaction to the sign and others will be inspired to check us out.”

And here is the part of the article where I enter the scene:

Bob Siegel, a member of Skyline Church in La Mesa and a self-described “Christian apologist,” said he doesn’t find the billboard offensive.

“But I do see a double standard from the atheists,” he said. “They can put up a sign like that, but during Christmas, if a manger goes on public land, they act like their civil liberties are being taken away.”

Siegel added: “It’s not unreasonable to believe in God, and it’s a myth that people who do are guided by blind faith. There are many good reasons to believe.”

Of course, I did not make such a comment without a willingness to back it up. I gave out my website and assured the reporter that people can find archived articles defending the existence of God from a rational, intellectual point of view. It might have been nice if this portion of the interview had not been conspicuously omitted. No matter. Let me make it clear on my own blog:  If you want to see evidence for God’s existence, go to www.bobsiegel.net and click into the sub-section entitled “Answers For Skeptics.”

Meanwhile, the following E Mail response was received at Skyline Church the same day as the newspaper publication:

From Jim (I’m withholding his last name)

Please tell Bob Siegel he is missing the point, or, more likely, intentionally ignoring it, when he compares the San Diego Coalition of Reason billboard to a nativity scene. I have yet to hear of anyone seriously protesting the holiday billboards that remind people that Christmas began as a religious holiday. What some people do find objectionable is the placement of religious images on property supported by public tax money, since the government is not supposed to support any particular religious belief.

Actually, Jim, I am not missing the point at all.  The Establishment Clause merely protects you from mandated religion. Nobody is forcing you to become a Christian by putting up a symbol and in the days of our forefathers, religious symbols were on public property all the time, so we can see rather clearly how they interpreted their own First Amendment. What the constitution meant to them is what the constitution means, period.

As for tax dollars, I am sympathetic to your position. I really am. But consider this: Our tax dollars go for many things and none of us are happy about all of the distributions. My tax dollars, for instance, fund public schools and some public universities, where the teachings are incompatible with Christianity at the very least and downright hostile to Christianity at the very most. Interesting how this “separation between church and state” never cuts both ways, isn’t it?  On the other hand, should a school put up Christmas decorations or should a county build a manger scene, your taxes do not go up, but remain the same.

Besides (although there are always exceptions) I have seen vast evidence that this goes beyond the issue of taxes in the minds of many atheists. Take a look at the decades old controversy surrounding Mt. Soledad’s cross. This was built as a World War 2 memorial. Everybody knows that. Yes, it includes a cross because in the aftermath of WW2, most people and many vets were buried with a cross or had a cross as part of the memorial. Atheists knew full well that this was not any kind of government mandate toward a particular religion and they still wanted to take the cross down. While debating an atheist on my own radio show, I asked him what harm the cross was causing inasmuch as he can merely turn away if he does not want to look at it.

He replied, “That cross might make people think we have a national religion.”

See my point? Now they want to pass laws based upon what people might think. Add the fact that some have attempted to purchase Mt. Soledad, so that it could become private property, instead of public property, and were still met with resistance. Finally, I have heard many atheists use as their ultimate reason, “I find these symbols offensive.”

Well, guess what? Free speech offends. Why did the constitution bother to protect free speech if speech was always going to be benign, and not rattle anyone’s cage?

Former Lesbian Expresses Concern About Hate Crime Legislation

The Bob Siegel Show is honored this week to offer a repeat broadcast: An interview with Anne Paulk, listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the country on the subject of homosexuality. Today's conventional wisdom teaches that people are born gay and can no more change their orientation than heterosexual people can change theirs. Anne's personal story boldly and effectively challenges this unquestioned teaching.

Anne also has strong concerns about impending Hate Crimes Legislation, which she feels will eventually suppress free speech and dissenting opinion on the subject of homosexuality.

A former lesbian, happily married to a former homosexual man, Anne has been a guest on Oprah, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, Focus on the Family and the 700 Club.

Her story has appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines including, People, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Time, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 1998, she was the cover story of Newsweek.

A courageous woman and articulate speaker, Anne encourages Christians to take a stand for their own rights without sacrificing compassion for the homosexual community.

Broadcast originally on 6-28-09 and repeated on 11-8-09, Anne's interview is now posted to my website: www.bobsiegel.net

Were There Democrats in the Bible?

I myself am a Democrat, but I always vote Republican. I do, however, have many fellow Christian friends and peers, also registered Democrats, who honestly believe in the direction today's Democratic Party is headed. Although frequently stereotyped as being part of the Religious Right, you would be surprised how many Evangelical Christians vote Democrat today. True, they part company with their political affiliation on matters such as abortion, but their honest, heart felt convictions about fairness and inequality keep them in "the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy."

Take, for example, the Socialist direction of contemporary Democrats. Often, they will turn to the Book of Acts, to show the Biblical basis for redistribution of wealth:

"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had." (Acts 4:32)

I know my friends who use this scripture are sincere and there is no doubt that they love the Lord. I do not judge their hearts, and who knows? On judgment day, they may be rewarded some great mansion while I serve as their janitor. Having said that, I am forced to point out to my well meaning, zealous Christian buds the difference between mandatory redistribution of wealth and voluntary redistribution of wealth. One has to do with authentic generosity. The other is just downright stealing.

For anyone who cares to study the Bible in context, I invite you to turn to the following chapter (Chapter 5) and read the account of Ananias and his wife, Sapphira. They sold their property and turned the money over to the church of Jerusalem, but this act of "altruism" was accompanied by deception. They lied about the amount of profit, having kept a kick back for themselves. With an intuition from God, Peter accused them of lying to the Holy Spirit. Ananias and Sapphira dropped dead on the spot.

Stop right there!  Before you are tempted to read a scripture passage out of context again, the lesson here is not that the couple was too stringy. Peter only had a problem with their dishonesty.

"Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing?  You have not lied to men, but to God." (Acts 5:4)

See? The money was at their disposal. Yes, the Bible encourages a giving, generous spirit. No, it does not teach mandatory redistribution of wealth. So much for reading politics into a narrative that meant something much different. On the other hand, since Ananias and Sapphira lied, I guess it is difficult to read the story without thinking of politicians.

This Time, I'm Glad Obama Forgot to Vet Him

Obama's twenty year relationship with the honorable Rev. Wright, has gotten him into the kind of trouble he hopes we will all forget and put behind us, but interestingly enough, his new pastor is every bit as controversial. Carey Cash, a Navy chaplain at Camp David, has come under criticism for proselytizing in the military. Of course, we're commanded to share our faith in the Bible and evangelism doesn't hurt people unless one threatens to kill those who refuse to convert, which leads to Cash's other vice: He is willing to call Islam a violent religion. Hmm...Islam, a violent religion? Where oh where would he have gotten an idea like that? Man, this guy is dangerous.

According to Rev. Cash, Islam is  "...a violent faith that from its birth has used the edge of the sword as a means to convert or conquer those with different religious convictions."

Last night, zealous Sean Hannity added Rev.Cash's name to the list of troublesome Obama appointments and partners, saying, "When will this president learn to start vetting people?"  I'm a big admirer of Sean Hannity but I cannot agree with him this time. Although Sean does a good job of speaking out against Militant-Islam, he has evidently bought into the lie about Islam-At -Large, namely that most Muslims are peaceful and only a few nutty terrorists have hijacked this benign faith. For the record:  Islam is not a peaceful religion and its founder, Mohammad absolutely commanded violence in the name of Allah (Surah 9). Obama's pastor was one-hundred percent accurate.

Having said that, I am convinced Obama did not know about Cash's beliefs and they will undoubtedly concern him more than all the dope dug up on his other controversial comrades. Unlike these additional associates whom the president  dismisses only after kicking and screaming, (or doesn't dismisses at all) Obama will drop  Rev. Cash  faster than he can apologize to holy Egypt for evil America. Already, his spokespeople are denying that the man is actually Obama's pastor. Obama just attends his services a lot, but that doesn't mean Rev. Cash is his pastor.

To those of you who like Obama and are concerned that he could have chosen such a dangerous Right-Wing mentor for spiritual guidance: Give the guy a break. This was only an accident. I'm sure when our president searched for a new minister, he never intended to find a true Christian who actually obeys the Bible and honestly assesses the Koran. It's all a mistake and the mistake will be quickly rectified.

Archaeology Backs Up Joseph: He's Not Just a Stage Show Anymore!

No longer can he be referred to only as a fictitious character from the Old Testament. Neither is his name limited to the lead singer in the 400th production you have seen of some youth theater's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, where you were forced to go back stage and tell your dear friend that her child was wonderful, even when he stunk.

Coins from Joseph's era have been discovered in boxes long ago stashed and ignored in Egypt's National Museum. They were previously believed to be charms and ornaments because some of them have holes, thus the slow interest and gradual realization that they were actually coins. One of the coins does indeed bear the image of Joseph and identifies him as the head of Pharaoh's treasury.

This is the first piece of evidence from the field of archaeology that authenticates Joseph as a Bible personage who really, truly lived, but not the first time facts eliminated other disputes from skeptics. Israel's very existence at the time ascribed to the exodus and even the reality of King David himself have been challenged. But recent findings forced all honest cynics to retract their words and take a second look.

David’s existence is corroborated by two pieces of basalt with the phrase, “House of David in one section and “King of Israel” in another. 1 A stele from ancient Egypt also provides much earlier corroboration for Israel’s existence as a nation during the time of King Mernapoth, the Pharaoh who succeeded Ramsees II.2 (You know.  That guy who messed up and saw his men clobbered at the Red Sea?  OK. “Sea of Reeds” for those of you just waiting to jump on me over accuracy.)

The Bible has been around for a long time and has survived attacks from every single generation. And yet, ironically, time also seems to be the Bible's friend, as time continues to unearth ancient witnesses.

Does God Speak Through Dreams, and If So, How Do We Interpret Them?

On this week's Bob Siegel Show: Nero-Surgeons will still admit that we understand very little about the confusing and interesting phenomenon of dreaming. Most of the time, a dream does not come from God. But God does choose to speak through dreams on occasion and there are many incidents in scripture describing divinely appointed dreams. In fact, if every instance of dreams were removed from the Bible, we would be missing much.

God continues to speak through dreams today and the high majority of my program is dedicated to learning principles of dream interpretation. Included in the discussion will be testimonies of some of my own dreams and dreams that my friends had.
