While You Speculate about Palin's Future, I Will Set Her Past Straight

Perhaps to avoid listening to one talking head after another, Sarah Palin chose 4th of July weekend to announce that she's stepping down as Governor of Alaska. Even talking heads will be busy stuffing their mouths with hot dogs today.  Not that some aren't commenting. Speculators wonder if Palin will use this time to launch a pre-campaign as our next president. Others say a half term governor wouldn't stand a chance.

Because her plans and reasons for the decision are so unclear, I will not pretend to know something I don't know. Therefore, instead of commenting on Sarah's future, allow me to take just a moment to clarify something about her past.

Just last week, some former McCain campaigners trashed Palin, blaming her for McCain's failure to win the 2008 election. Leave it to our wise Republican Party to shoot their own wounded.  I have news for you loyal hacks, so quick to throw somebody under the bus in the hopes of saving your own miserable political futures: John McCain's campaign was dead in the water before Palin came on board. She breathed new life and rejuvenated the Republican ticket like no one before had ever done. She gave an electrifying speech at the convention (even when the teleprompter failed) and had Barack Obama running so scared and punch drunk, he began making stupid comments about pigs with lipstick.

True, Palin didn't do too well with Katie Couric, but that was only because McCain's brilliant handlers wouldn't allow her to be herself. Sarah's genuineness was part of her charm at the convention, but prior to Couric's interview, the poor woman was stuffed with useless information as if she were cramming for an exam. And what genius approved a pre-recorded interview that CBS could edit?

Despite this McCain imposed handicap, the Republican ticket was leading by double digits before the economy began to collapse. Then, Obama, lying through his teeth, managed to convince people that the bank failures were all the fault of George Bush and that McCain would be four more years of Bush. Republicans still may have recovered if McCain had allowed Palin to talk about Obama's past connections such as the racist, Jew hating, America hating Rev.Wright.  Honestly, one wonders if McCain wasn't taken aside during those last weeks of the election by some incredible strategist: "Look, John, do you want to go down in history as a maverick or as a white man who defeated the first major African-American president?"'

Toward the end of the election, McCain seemed to be making about as much effort as the tortoise racing the hair. I realize that's an unfair analogy. The tortoise did a better job.

Naturally, I will never be able to prove what motives or efforts McCain was juggling. But I do know this: John McCain lost the election because of John McCain, not because of Sarah Palin.

Understanding the Difference Between Forgiving and Excusing: An Important Discussion For Today's Christians

Recently I forwarded some horrific pictures that had come my direction over the internet. They were snap shots of British Muslims demonstrating on the streets of London.  Because Islam keeps claiming to be a religion of peace and because the Politically Correct have bought this lie, I found these images telling and chilling. They speak volumes, not only about Islam's violence but about her intentions to take over the western world, an idea that today's naive elitists tend to laugh at. Some of the captions read:

"Slay Those Who Insult Islam"

"Europe is the Cancer. Islam is the answer."

"Islam Will Dominate the World."

"Freedom, Go To Hell."

"Europe, Take Lessons From 9/ll."

"Europe. You Will Pay.  Your 9/11 Is On Its Way"

"Be Prepared For the Real Holocaust."

"Exterminate Those Who Slander Islam."

Despite these photos, England comes down hard on those who criticize Muslims. England has also decided to stop talking about the holocaust in public schools because its Muslim population does not believe the holocaust even happened and finds such teaching offensive. And in Canada, it is now considered Hate Speech to speak against Islam. It is equally deemed, "Hate Speech" in Canada to speak against homosexuality, even though homosexuality is against the law in most Muslim countries and punishable by death in many. (You just have to see the irony.)

Stop....Before you continue. Yes, I am aware that there are peaceful Muslims in the world. My purpose right now is not to get into a discussion about Islam. I have already written many articles on the subject and I will put links to such blogs at the end of this one.

No, believe it or not, my concern at the moment, is not Muslim theology, but rather Christian theology!  After sending out these pictures, I, (not I, personally, but I, along with many others on an E Mail list) received what appeared to be a loving challenge/rebuke from a Christian brother sharing a page out of a book he had recently written. The subject was forgiveness. He was reminding us that we are to forgive our enemies.

I will not mention the name of this person. I do not know him well but I do know him and from all I have ever observed, he is an intelligent, loving, dedicated Christian brother. I have nothing but respect for him.  There is no doubt whatsoever that he was speaking sincerely, in a manner he hopes will please God. As far as his heart and motives are concerned, I am certain God is pleased. But this innocence is exactly what made the man's response so frustrating to me.  Often, the heart and the head are in two different places. Even smart, bright people can be sincerely misled. Still, his view is far from unique and so I offer this response not to him alone, but to the countless Christians who need to hear some very important words.

My concern comes from the fact that no where in the E Mail containing the pictures, did anyone ask Christians to not forgive Muslims, or not forgive their enemies. The purpose was simply to tell the truth: Islam is not a religion of peace. Indeed, Islam intends to take over the world. I doubt that they will succeed in such a goal but we should understand the goal. Monstrous evil is in the wind and people need to be warned. Because I and others choose to inform the world about an evil enemy, will people automatically assume we are unforgiving?  If so, something is drastically wrong with our current understanding of Jesus and His message.

The truth is, Muslims today are coming to Christ in the tens of thousands, year after year. This is wonderful and I rejoice to see the forgiveness of God. I even had the pleasure of  personally leading a Muslim to Christ and Arabic Christian Perspective has had numerous guests on my radio program. None of this means I will be silent or refrain from discussing the many Muslims who have not (as of yet) repented and who plan to spread a repressive cult. As Christians and American citizens, we owe it to our children to leave behind a culture and life as peaceful as the one we were blessed to experience.

I am convinced that today's generation of Christianity is quick to embrace the doctrine of forgiveness without really understanding it. Yes, the command to forgive is Biblical but it comes with two extremely important qualifications: 1) There is a difference between forgiving and excusing. 2) There is also a distinction between who is or is not to be forgiven.  Let's unpack these amendments one at a time:

1) There is a difference between forgiving and excusing.

The Bible is literally filled from start to finish with warnings against evil, spoken by God through the mouth of his prophets and apostles. God called certain people evil and God called certain nations evil as well.

-Jesus, speaking of Judas: "Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil" (John 6:70)

-John the Baptist calls Herod evil in Luke 3:19.

-Jeremiah, speaking for God about Israel: "The people of Israel and of Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done" (Jer 32:32).

-Jeremiah, speaking of the King of Babylon: "...the evil Morecach became king of Babylon."

Although the Bible teaches that everyone has a sinful nature, the Bible does not imply that every single, human being is evil.  Evil refers to a man who has seared his conscience and completely given into sin (1 Tim 1:1-19, Heb 6). This is why a book like Proverbs distinguishes between the righteous man and the wicked man. Yes, a righteous man has his own sins to contend with as well, and yes we all need the atonement of Christ on the cross, but righteous refers to one who is working through that process of sanctification with God's Spirit.

VERY IMPORTANT: A righteous man does not go around calling himself righteous. On the contrary, he refers to himself as sinful (selfish) and cooperates with the Holy Spirit to have his heart continually purged and scrutinized. It is important that we not confuse a humble child of God for a self-righteous religious person. Jesus came to deal with many sins, but the sin of self righteousness was of special concern to Him. Such people could not or would not admit/confront their own selfish natures. The Pharisees (religious teachers of the day) were in this category, not all of them, but certainly many of them.  Jesus did not hold back when describing the Pharisees. He called them "a brood of vipers" (Matt 12).  He called them "whitewashed tombs with dead bones inside" (Matt 23).

Yes, Jesus said those things, the same Jesus who instructed us to forgive. If He came amongst us today and talked in such a manner to a self righteous hypocrite, some Christian (not knowing whom he was talking to) might remind Jesus that as Christians, we are called to forgive. Jesus would also be exhorted to love His neighbor.

The truth is, Jesus knew the difference between tough love and merciful love. With Him, it was not a "one size fits all" ministry. The woman caught in adultery was treated with tenderness and compassion. Why?  Because she knew and admitted her sin. On the other hand, the Pharisees were so proud, they needed to be taken down a peg in order to be saved. At the beginning of the Book of Acts, we do read about many Pharisees giving their lives to Christ. Others may have turned so evil in their self righteousness that they reached a point of no return, blaspheming the Holy Spirit and committing a sin even Jesus did not die for it (Matt 12).  When talking about such men, Jesus was speaking, not to save people at a point of no return, but rather, to warn those who were under their wicked influence. Indeed, He lamented that Pharisees made some of their own converts "twice as fit for hell as they themselves were" (Matt 23).

Yes, as Christians, we proclaim the gospel (good news) about a God who forgives us for our sins. But that is not the entire gospel. The gospel also teaches that God wants to deliver us from sins committed against us.  This is why demons are cast out. This is why supernatural healing takes place to release us from sickness that is the result of a sin cursed world. This is why the Messiah was not only to die for the sins of Israel but to rescue Israel from her enemies and rule over Israel as a benevolent king. This is why Jesus will return to save Israel and the church from her enemies. This is why, in heaven, we will no longer fear murder, racism or brutal oppression. We will be delivered from our own inclinations to do such things and those who do not want to be delivered are separated out, spending eternity in hell. This is why Jesus instructs us to spread His kingdom in the meantime, in the here and now. Why did Jesus call His gospel "good news to the poor?" Because the poor are the victims of a greedy society. God wants to deliver us from evil and God wants us to warn people when evil is approaching (Luke 4:18-19).

The early church spoke out against the evil of  Roman slavery (1 Tim 1, Gal 3, I Cor 7). Christians like Wilbur Wilberforce and Charles Finny followed the example of Paul and condemned the practice in England and America. In America, such condemnation of evil inspired the Civil War.  Should the war not have been fought? Should Christians of the North and the Christian slaves of the South have defined forgiveness as a willingness to roll over and allow slavery?

In the days of World War Two, was it proper for Christians to call the German Nazis evil?  Was it proper to fight them?  After all, not all Germans were Nazis and some Nazis repented of their sins. Despite, this truth, does it not seem right that Hitler was stopped and stopped by force, since Prime Minister Chamberlain's concessions were about as effective as an ice cube in the desert?

As a pastor, I did a great deal of counseling. Many came to me who had been scarred for life, some by their very own parents. I met men and women alike who had been beaten or molested. With others, it was not a matter of what a parent had done, but rather, what they had not done. Some parents never told their own children that they loved them. These children grew up and as Christians realized how much hurt they were carrying. In all cases there was an anger against their parents. They heard somewhere that they must forgive, so they went through the motions of forgiveness, not really accomplishing anything and obviously not feeling any better. Deep inside, they still wrestled tremendous rage and resentment, but now, a Christian guilt trip was laid on top of an already large pile of pain. As if things weren't depressing enough, they were also made to feel guilty for not forgiving, even though they had tried to forgive time and time again.

"The problem," I said to so many of my parishioners, "Is that you are confusing forgiving with excusing.  The reason you still feel anger is that you have not been freed up by Christians and granted permission by the church to express your anger."

"But isn't anger a sin?"

"Not all anger. God expressed his anger many times in the Bible. Exodus 4 says "The anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses."
In Ephesians we read, 'Be angry but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger' (Eph. 4:26). Anger is not a sin. Inappropriate anger is a sin and legitimate, but misplaced, anger is a sin. Anger at a person who has done you no wrong, simply because you feel annoyed and have a bad temper, is a sin. But if somebody has truly offended you by force, insult, gossip, or another abuse, not only do you have a right to be angry, it would be emotionally unhealthy to not feel that way.  Even so, what we do or fail to do with legitimate anger can also be a sin. If you have a bad day at work and take the anger out on your family when you return home because you are too fearful to confront your boss, that is a sin.  Anger held inside is also a sin because it ferments and becomes bitterness. Or anger released in a fit of rage is a sin because you are out of control. Appropriate anger must be expressed but it can be verbalized without throwing furniture. Often, I have sat down with people over a cup of coffee, very calmly saying to them, 'Let me tell you exactly how you made me feel when you spoke those comments last week.' Without yelling, I am releasing anger and when I am done with this benign encounter, I do not feel angry any longer."

After sharing these truths, I would encourage my parishioners to confront their abusive parents, often with a letter so that they could take the time to carefully word things. The end of the letter might say something to this effect:  "I needed to get these burdens off my chest so that I no longer harbor bitterness toward you. I do not want to continue being angry and sharing the anger was my way of stopping. It is my hope that by expressing this anger, we can heal our relationship. I want you to know that I do not excuse what you did. What you did to me was wrong and it will always be wrong. However, now that I have confronted you, I do forgive you."

And yet, supposing the parent does not seek forgiveness, has not asked for forgiveness and does not feel they need forgiveness. In that case, the grown child still experiences a catharsis of released anger and evaporated bitterness. They now have an attitude of forgiveness, a forgiving heart, and a willingness to forgive their parent at any time, however (and this is my main controversial point) if the parent has not received such forgiveness, the relationship obviously is not healed. This means, the one who will not receive forgiveness is not forgiven, which leads to our second qualification:

2) There is also a distinction between who is or is not to be forgiven.

Luke 17:3 says, " If your brother sins, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him."

"If he repents, forgive him."  This is an extremely important and frequently overlooked qualification. Would not the reverse also be true? "If he does not repent, do not forgive him."

Luke 17verse makes even more sense when we remember that God is our example here. Does God forgive everyone?  I know that as Christians we want to rush in and say," Yes, of course." You are correct in a sense, inasmuch as forgiveness is promised by God and commanded of Christians. But God not only authored those words, He went on to teach us what He meant by them.

QUESTION: Will everybody be in heaven?  No, only those who receive Christ, or more specifically put, only those who accept God's forgiveness. The person in hell for all of eternity does not feel forgiven and in point of fact is not forgiven. Yes, he could have been forgiven. Yes, God wanted to forgive him. Yes, Jesus died for his sins but not all sins. The sin of refusing to accept Jesus, the sin of rejecting God's forgiveness, was not paid for (Matt 12, Heb 6, Heb 10). In similar manner, our friends or families are forgiven by us when they ask for forgiveness.

My dad disowned me for becoming a Christian. Any anger held toward my dad was eventually dealt with and I did have a genuine desire to forgive him. I could even picture in my mind what it would be like. But my dad never asked my forgiveness and passed away, separated from his son. My mother is still alive. She had gone along with Dad's decision to disown me because she was afraid to confront him. After Dad passed away, my mother expressed regret over all that went on over the years. It has been a joy and privilege to forgive my mother and in her case, she was able to experience my forgiveness because she wanted forgiveness.

So far, it has been helpful to compare the healing of a human relationship to the healing of a God/human relationship. But there is also an important difference. God alone has a right to offer forgiveness to all who will receive it, because all have sinned against God. It is not the same with me. Not all humans have sinned against me. Only some have. It is not incumbent upon me to forgive somebody for what they did to a third party. That, quite simply, is none of my business. Oh sure, I could tell this person that God forgives them. But if they have wronged another individual, the two of them must settle things themselves.

Often times, when some murderer is on death row, I will hear Christians call in to talk shows, saying that we must forgive the man. Excuse me, but the only individuals in a position to forgive are the families of the victims. And in those cases, whether or not they extend forgiveness depends upon whether or not the murderer has owned up to what he has done and asked for forgiveness.  Should they forgive him if he repents? Yes. Should they harbor bitterness in their hearts if he does not repent? No. Nevertheless, if the murderer has not asked the family to forgive what he did to their loved one, they have not forgiven him, neither should they be encouraged to.

Likewise, when Muslims go around with signs claiming the holocaust never happened, or rulers like Ahmadinnejad brag about how they will sponsor a new holocaust, it is a gross misrepresentation of justice when Christians jump in to quickly offer forgiveness. Let the Jews decide for themselves if they wish to forgive some holocaust deniers/instigators.

Christians may forgive those who speak and fight against Christians. Even so, in Revelation 19 we see Christians rejoicing over the destruction of those who murdered God's servants, people who chose not to repent and to continue with their evil. True, I would love to see everyone turn from sin someday, but many will not. Nevertheless, I can celebrate when a wicked man dies because he is no longer going to be able to hurt anyone else and because justice has finally been done. Yes, he could have known mercy, but if he rejects mercy, I am still grateful to see justice.

SUMMARY: Speaking out against evil does not mean we are unwilling to forgive evil. But speaking out against evil and working to stop evil are also part of the gospel. We are to forgive sin when the sinner asks for forgiveness. This is the way God handles it. Finally, even if one does not ask for forgiveness, we are to potentially forgive them and carry forgiveness in our hearts, rather than bitterness.

I know that for many of my Christian brothers and sisters, this was a whole new way of looking at things. I ask you to open your minds, consider what I am saying, and bottom line, if you do not feel I am being biblical, go with the Bible. If I should turn out to be wrong, heck...just forgive me.

Credit Where Credit is Due, Unless Credit Comes Without Credibility

Yesterday our troops withdrew from key parts of Iraq and Iraqis celebrated their independence.  Just watch now how the Obama administration grabs credit, even though George Bush, from the beginning, planned to withdraw once matters were secure. This was already the planned time in accordance with a successful surge. But since Obama campaigned by promising to bring our troops home, he will want to make it look like everything was his doing.

Oh well. Don't lose heart, Bush fans. If anything goes wrong, if violence escalates once again and our troops need to return, Obama will switch gears and give all the credit to Bush!

Former Lesbian Expresses Concern About Hate Crime Legislation

The Bob Siegel Show is honored this week to interview Anne Paulk, listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the country on the subject of homosexuality. Today's conventional wisdom teaches that people are born gay and can no more change their orientation than heterosexual people can change theirs. Anne's personal story boldly and effectively challenges this unquestioned teaching.

Anne also has strong concerns about impending Hate Crimes Legislation, which she feels will eventually suppress free speech and dissenting opinion on the subject of homosexuality.

A former lesbian, happily married to a former homosexual man, Anne has been a guest on Oprah, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, Focus on the Family and the 700 Club.

Her story has appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines including, People, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Time, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 1998, she was the cover story of Newsweek.

Barack Obama, My Provider

The following lyrics can be sung to the tune; Jehovah Jireh

Barack Obama,
My provider,
His health care's sufficient for me,
Barack Obama,
My provider,
His health care's sufficient for me.

Barack will supply all our needs,
Along with that Nancy Pelosi,
They give their taxes charge over me,
And that makes all our health care come free,
come free, come free,
And that makes all our health care come free.

Barack Obama, my provider,
Protector of you and of me,
Barack Obama, my provider,
Protector of you and of me,

Barack faces all enemies,
With hand shakes and well worded treat-ties,
He's very good at a-pol-ogy,
Barack knows how to get on his knee,
his knee, his knee,
Barack knows how to get on his knee.

Well, That Does It! He May Just Take Off the Gloves Now!

The results are in from President Obama's attempts to change his tone in the Middle East. Consider the following gestures:

1) While campaigning, last year,  Obama promises to have unconditional talks with Iranian President Ahmadinnejad.

2) After being elected, this promise continues.

3) On his first star tour to Egypt, Obama apologizes for America, compares Israel's treatment of the Palestinians to American slavery of blacks, and assures Iran publicly that they have a right to continue their nuclear program.

4) When the fraudulent elections are over in Iran, Obama refuses to condemn them.

5) When the Iranian government violently beats down protesters, arresting many and killing some, Obama says he does not want to be viewed as taking sides, for this would only give our enemies an excuse to say bad things about America. Evidently, this is something they only do when we renounce violence.

6) When asked if the diplomatic talks are still offered, Obama's press secretary says, "Yes."

7) Finally, after much public pressure and criticism, Obama denounces the violence but still holds out an olive branch for diplomatic talks. Obama supporters praise his actions. In response to suggestions that this was too little too late, they point to a man who was wise enough to appraise the situation before quickly acting. Here's their line: "As the true colors of Iran's regime became more and more apparent, Obama changed his response accordingly."

Hmm...Those Iranian government acts of violence against their own citizens must have been quite an education for Obama. I guess Ahamadinnejad;'s denial of the holocaust and vow to destroy Israel weren't sufficient to tip him off.  But even the post-enlightened Obama leaves something to be desired  inasmuch as the offer to have diplomatic talks are still on the table right next to the mustard and relish for those Independence Day dogs. Indeed, Ahmadinnejad may be so moved by our annual celebration of freedom that he'll choose to extend a little freedom himself.

These seemed to be the ideas on our president's mind.

The result of Obama's novel gestures and unparalleled appeasement:  Ahamadinnejad vows to get even, condemns America for interfering, and says Obama is no different than George Bush.

Maybe that will do the trick. Nothing else seemed to be making Obama mad enough to put his foot down, but this latest insult is something else altogether, a down right foul!

"OK, Mr, Ahmadinnejad, you can deny the holocaust all you want and threaten Israel till the cows come home. As for beating your public protesters? Well I don't like that very much, and yet, was I not still willing to reach out my hand and soften my speech?  So you reward these noble gestures by comparing me to George Bush?  Heck, I never compared you to Hitler even though you do talk a lot like him..George Bush, eh?  Now you're just being down right mean and nasty.  No more Mr. Nice Guy from me. I have made every possible concession and I was planning more but you can forget it now. I'm returning the See's Candy and coupon for a free Slurpee at 7/11.  That's just for starters: Rest assured, if this inappropriate behavior continues, you may actually provoke the wrath of the United Nations. And if you thought their previous resolutions were tough, wait till you read the next one. It'll be a doozy!. Oh yeah!  We also canceled those 4th of July hot dogs! We're serving Quiche instead! Thank about that, the next time you want to throw your weight around!"

CONCLUSION:

Our president bent over backwards more than a walking, talking Gumby doll but it makes no difference to people who have decided that they simply enjoy hating America.  All is not lost, Mr. President. Shall I suggest something else?  Tell Ahamadinnejad, if he doesn't behave himself, you'll give him a time out.

While They Talk About the Electric Jackson, We'll Steal Their Electric Jacks.

It couldn't be timed better: Today our House of Representatives votes on a bill nicknamed Cap and Trade. I'll bet over two thirds of the country doesn't even know what this bill is all about. Maybe you, yourself, never heard of it before. Well, don't worry. Most of Congress doesn't understand either. The bill is 1200 pages long and few, if any, of our politicians have read the phone book thick pages, even though it's shorter than the stimulus package bill that they also didn't read.

Cap and Trade
(code for "Clean Energy Bill" ) was cranked out quickly and jammed through by our administration. Why the rush? Well, for one thing, taking time would mean debating the subject. Our current administration and current congress does not seem to enjoy debate. A real discussion, after all, would question the whole purpose of this "clean energy bill"  in the face of some 700 scientists around the world calling the whole Global Warming paranoia a hoax. Yes, 700! That's 3 times the amount of scientists who sponsored the U.N's Global Warming resolution.  But we can't take the time to hear these people out. Neither should we dare point to hot spots like Arizona, which had record cold winters this past year.

And there's another reason for a bill that burns rubber faster than those unfriendly cars whom they plan to outlaw.  Obama promised that there would be no raised taxes on the Middle Class or small businesses, only on evil rich people. Technically, Cap and Trade is not a tax because it will not be collected by a tax agency. It is, instead, a mega-morphed gas and electric bill which some estimate will cost Americans 3000 dollars a year more than what they already pay. You see, our government, by joining with gas and electric companies, is imposing a tax disguised as a monthly stipend that you are already used to paying. It's a pretty good disguise, actually.  The envelope and logo will look exactly the same. It's only when you open it up and see the cost that your eyes will pop out of their sockets. But the very fact that you someday see this bill, means the law will have long since passed without you having time to ask President Obama if this kind of, sort of, violates his no new tax pledge.

The idea here is for our government to help us save energy by taxing energy more, thus discouraging the usage of bad energy and funding clean, green energy at the same time. Great way to kill two birds with one stone but let's not describe it that way. It might encourage environmentalists to find an even newer tax.

So you see? Obama did keep his promises about no new taxes. Oh yeah, sure, you'll be paying three grand a year extra but that is not a tax. Why?  Because we don't call it a tax!

As for Obama's other promise about no new legislation without first putting impending bills over the internet so the public can be aware of them, well he's probably just being sensitive to a populace which won't care this weekend. They're too busy mourning Michael Jackson and the Michael Jackson story is going to be THE ONLY THING you see on our 24 hour news networks. Never mind, Cap and Trade. Never mind North Korea. Never mind Iran.  Oh yeah...That nationalized health care thing that would literally destroy our country is also coming up....Once again, never mind!

I do agree that Michael Jackson's death is real news and important to the many people who loved him and viewed him as a cultural icon. Some headlines the first few days along with handful of television specials are certainly in order. But is it naive to hope that ostriches will take their heads out of the sand long enough to see our freedoms removed?

Meanwhile, I wonder how much energy will be used up when people open their little envelopes and immediately call electric companies to find out what the Sam Hill  is going on.  Just about this time next year, June 2010, Greta Van Susteren will probably be ready to start winding down on the Michale Jackson story and people might be able to discuss other matters, such as, a government which steals more than Ali Baba's 40 thieves!  OOPS!  By innocently referring to a classic children's tale, I accidentally mentioned Middle East thieves, even though it was meant as a metaphor for Washington criminals. I guess I'll worry about that one later when the Hate Speech bill also tiptoes through. I should be safe for another week or so.

Please, This Time Let's Make It An Affair Not To Remember.

Once again, a politician has confessed to having an affair. Once again, it was a Republican. Not that Democrats don't betray spouses as well. It's just that, for the most part, they experience very little consequence for their own sins. This time, the guilty man is Governor Mark Sanford of North Carolina, famous in the news lately for refusing Obama's stimulus package, out of justifiable concern that the federal government would start controlling his state the way it has controlled so many other bailed out entities. I admired Sanford's battle and that's why I am so disappointed about the distraction. Now, an otherwise brave governor with a lifetime record of distinguished service will be remembered for a mistake, a mistake he confessed far more quickly than so many other public leaders.

Our salivating media delights in sharing Sanford's personal E Mails. Why? What purpose do they serve if the man has already confessed? Had he lied and some investigative journalism then uncovered a few incriminating E Mails, that would be another matter altogether. But right now, this is not about journalism. It's about ratings and sensationalism.

I am also bothered that Sanford will trump far more important news, such as; North Korea, Iran, the current Hate Crimes Bill, the current Cap and Trade Bill, and other legal travesties being gently shoved down our naive, unsuspecting throats while the country is literally pacified by a new sexual escapade. Have you seen the gleam in Greta Van Susteren's eyes?  Now, Greta has a theme again, something to give her as much mileage as Anna Nicole, Scott Peterson and Natalie Holloway. Lately, the red meat that feeds her panel of talking heads has been limited to unsensational events. You know...The kind of stuff that actually affects the whole world. Do you remember an incident which dominated our 24 hour news networks in the weeks leading up to 9/11? The disappearance of Washington intern, Chandra Levy. Naturally, for her parents, this was the only important subject, but people disappear all the time and Chandra Levy saturated our news only because Congressman Gary Condit was alleged  to have something to do with her invisibility. It put our country in a trance. Then 9/11 hit. Another 9/11 could come at the drop of a hat. World events are boiling like a pressure cooker and it is only a matter of time before something erupts. Will we be wasting our efforts talking about marital affairs?

Please understand: As a Christian, I do not take the subject of infidelity lightly. But a little perspective is in order here.

1) When we expect public figures to be perfect, they develop Messianic complexes and lead us in the direction of disaster. One can look up to a man without believing he can fly. Abe Lincoln is a perfect example and his words are also appropriate right now: "I never trusted a man who had no vices."

2) History has proven that a leader's sexual life and his ability to guide the country are not necessarily locked together. Both John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt had affairs. If you think I am bringing this up only to justify the actions of a Republican governor, I remind you that I listed two Democratic presidents whom I admire. I also remind you that I, myself, am still a registered Democrat even though it has been a long time since I have found anything to like about the Democratic Party.

3) The term hypocrite comes up a lot when sex scandals hit politicians and this warrants some clarification. Paul Bagola  and  many other liberal pundits lost no time spewing forth the tired, anticipated talking points: "Sure Democratic politicians also have affairs but it's different for Republicans. They are the ones always claiming to have superior family values. This makes them such hypocrites. Look at the way they went after Bill Clinton."

I find these editorials to be very disingenuous for several reasons:

A) There is a difference between voting for family friendly legislation and claiming to be personally superior where family values are concerned. My own marriage ended in divorce. That does not change my view of marriage. I still believe traditional marriage is good for the country and when I see people happily married, I am grateful.  How much more should a public leader, who was given the sacred trust of caring for our country, protect family values despite the condition of his own family?  Conversely, if a politician's voting record shipwrecks America, his having a good marriage would offer little consolation.

B) Republicans sought to remove Clinton from office, not because of an affair, but because of lying under oath.  They were not "obsessed with sex."  That evaluation is liberal spin.

C) In every election, Democrats run against Republicans by crying, "We stand for family values too! How dare those self righteous Republicans claim to have a monopoly on family values?"  Remember? Well, OK then:  If that is the case, Democrats and Republicans alike ascribe to family values. Democrats cannot be judged differently on the basis that they do not hold themselves up to quite the same standard as those "hypocritical Republicans."

D) People operate out of a false definition of hypocrisy. Christianity, one large chunk of Conservatism, is perhaps the most misunderstood religion in the history of planet Earth. Judgment and condemnation are not the themes of Jesus. Forgiveness and mercy are.  Failing to live up to a standard does not translate into hypocrisy. Hypocrites were described by Jesus as people who denied their own sinfulness but ascribed sinfulness to others. A true hypocrite is a person who changes his standard only when a new definition is convenient.  If I say it's wrong for you to have an affair but OK to have one myself, due to some kind of extenuating circumstances, that would be hypocrisy. Likewise, (ironically) holding Republicans to one measuring rod and Democrats to another, is hypocrisy.

Senator John Edwards was not only discovered having an affair, but using public campaign funds to pay off the woman. Our mainstream media virtually left this story alone.  Even when facts started surfacing, it took the National Enquirer, of all papers, to get to the bottom of things. Congressman Barney Frank was involved in a brothel that featured male prostitution. That's not an affair. That's just downright criminal! The man still holds office. Even so, my only concern about seeing such a clown in Washington, is that he and fellow Democrats torpedoed our economy with organizations like Fanny Mae and then figured out how to blame it all on George Bush in an attempt to cover their tracks.

In both cases, (Edwards and Frank) the mainstream media backed off. What did the two men have in common?  They were both Democrats.

CONCLUSION: Should it be discovered that Governor Sanford broke the law, I will be the first to say he must go, as I believed Clinton should have left office (not because of Monica, but because of perjury) Until that time, let's be clear: Neither Republican nor Democratic politicians have had much to brag about in the morality department lately. But then, they are human beings. Maybe if we allowed them to be flawed, we would ask less of their private lives and more of their public lives. Right now, our politicians are selling America down the river and virtually inviting our enemies to attack us again. This concerns me a little bit more than a quick trip to Argentina.

APPENDIX: I just now heard the news of Michael Jackson's death and I am saddened for him and his family. I am also saddened for other reasons:  Now our media will have two stories to sensationalize instead of one, all the while ignoring about 10 important events.

England May Have Censored Curriculum, But It Does Serve to Educate Us After All

While England goes full steam ahead with a horrible, reprehensible decision to no longer teach about the holocaust in its public schools, perhaps we can still glean some true education from all of this:

Inasmuch as the royal "education" strategy is motivated out of a desire to not offend Muslims, how can people continue to describe Islam as a religion of peace? I keep hearing the P.C. talking points: "Islam is a peaceful faith. Only a few terrorists have hijacked and distorted its benevolent teachings."

Does England view their entire Muslim population as a group of terrorists?  Of course not. Therefore, this is an attempt to appease the mainstream Muslim population,
a population growing and thriving in Not So Great Britain, a population which evidently accepts the racist, anti-semitic propaganda that the holocaust never happened, .

No real surprises here since Jew hating was part of the Koran 1300 years before the holocaust anyway (Surah 5:82).

Yes, there are some peaceful Muslims in the world, but I grow tired of the obligatory disclaimer: England's majority Muslim population evidently shares a view held by Muslims in the Middle East, such as the many Muslims of Egypt who clapped for everything Obama said, except for his laments about the holocaust.

If there is a broad group of Muslims who do not share this belief, very few of them are speaking out, and even if they did, they would (ironically) be at odds with their own Koran.

Hmm...What's next?  Will they figure out that Big Ben contains a Hebrew name? Ben, after all, is the Hebrew word for son. Well golly, gee!  We don't want to offend England's Muslim population all over again after appeasing their disbelief in the holocaust! I've got it! Just change the name of that famous clock tower to Big Bin Laden.

You're Wrong. Even With This, He Could Come Up Smelling Like A Rose!

Tragic as the brutal assault against Iranian protesters may be, Conservatives have expressed optimism about at least one wrinkle in this provocative news story: It might just wake people up once and for all about the weak and ineffective foreign policies of President Obama.

Don't count on it, my fellow Conservatives!  Obama the Smooth has an uncanny ability to bounce back and come up smelling like a rose. Right now, he may be holding off, out of a desire to maintain some type of diplomatic rapport with Ahmadinnejad, but should this tyrant be overthrown, (apart from Obama's help) Obama will still find a way to grab credit for the historical twist.  All he has to do is give a speech about how his softer tone abroad inspired a more peaceful government, unlike that dastardly George Bush!  He'll say it with style. He'll say it with charisma. The New York Times will hail  the speech as a masterpiece that rivals George Washington's farewell address. It will be amplified with Democratic talking points, distributed by MSNBC and presto: Watch how the hand is quicker than the eye! Obama knows how to take credit for anything good and he knows how to blame Bush for anything bad.

It doesn't have to come out that way. I suppose America could  instead return to that long forgotten art called, thinking.

How Should We Interpret the Bible?

On this week's Bob Siegel Show

Catholics interpret the Bible according to their traditions, councils and clergy. Mormons interpret the Bible according to their prophets. Even Evangelical Christians, before having a Bible Study, ask the Holy Spirit to open their eyes and illuminate the scriptures.

QUESTION: If God already inspired His word, is it not clear?  Do we need to pray over its interpretation or trust a prophet to interpret it for us or do we simply read what it says?

Jokes Don't Last Long These Days

In yesterday's blog, I joked that PETA (People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals) would be upset with Obama for swatting a fly. No, it was not beyond my imagination that they could truly be upset, but yes, my intentions were motivated mostly out of humor.

Well, they did protest.  Mind you, they didn't get incredibly upset. God forbid that a special interest group should be too critical of THE OBAMA, but they did express disappointment, saying this fly swatting incident demonstrates that the man "is not perfect."

Gee, I would have thought Obama demonstrated that he wasn't perfect by voting against the Illinois Infant Protection Act. The killing of human babies does not concern PETA, but swat a fly and you get their attention.

We should not be surprised. After all, this is the group that put up a picture of Auswitch Concentration Camp next to a plate of fried chicken with a caption that said, "The New Holocaust."

In an attempt to elevate animal life, PETA has lowered the value of human life. Nothing like watering down the impact of the real holocaust to pave a road for the Ahamadenijads of the world who want to succeed with a new one.

PETA, your noble intentions will paint you as morally bankrupt enablers of evil by future historians, but that is not for certain. It would depend upon whether human history can survive this very peculiar age we live in.  I guess my joke didn't last too long. I guess it wasn't destined to. After all, none of this nonsense is really all that funny. It's actually quite sad and tragic.

Who Says We Have a Weak President? Flies Don't Say It! At Least, Not Anymore!

With all that's going on in the world today, you'd think our major news networks would have more to talk about than President Obama successfully killing a fly in the middle of a White House interview. While listening to all this salivating hype, one comes away with the impression that the man victoriously jousted Sir Lancelot! Oh well! Since the purpose of my blog is not news reporting but news analyses, I will offer my own two cents on the subject, and remember, two cents is much harder to come by in today's failing economy, so don't underestimate the priceless gift I am offering.

First of all, I'm always happy to hear about the death of a fly. As a general rule, I really don't care for flies very much. I've thought long and hard on the subject. I can't come up with one redeeming virtue from that winged, six-eyed mini-monster. They spoil picnics, they boost the evil fly swatter industry, and they have the potential (evidently) of ruining the hard hitting, objective interviews that President Obama faces day in and day out. Years from now, when I get to heaven, I will ask God why he created flies. If Noah is around, I will ask him a question as well: "Why didn't you swat those two flies?"   Perhaps part of the answer is that neither Noah nor anyone else would dare claim to be as much of a living hero as THE OBAMA.

Anyway, kudos, President Obama, for your bold courage, targeted skill, and focused determination. That's one fly who will never live again. You did a superb job, and frankly, some of us didn't think you had it in you. Not only have you stood up to the creature kingdom, you also brushed off PETA, who may have a thought or two about how the life of a fly is every bit as important as the life of a human being.

The world can sleep just a little more peacefully now. As for the nuclear bombs of North Korea, as for the holocaust threats of Iran, as for Islamic terrorists threatening to destroy the United States, Well, OK, Sure...If you're going to bring up all that...

Honestly, isn't it nice to meet at least one living being whom even President Obama realizes he can't negotiate with?

I'm Not Exactly a Prophet, But...

The news has been in a buzz over the latest election in Iran. Not only did President Ahamadinnejad win another term, he won by a landslide according to reliable sources from Iran's "election board."  Did you fall out of your chair when you heard this news? Was it the surprise shock of your life, the political upset of the century?

Look, I've never claimed to be any prophet. Nevertheless, I knew long ago that Ahamadinnejad would win. Call me emotional, but there's just something about this guy. I mean, anyone who would deny the holocaust earns a certain reputation for truth telling, does he not?  And his openly stated intentions to destroy Israel certainly say something about the man's love for power.

And so.... Of course he won the election!  In fact, he won that election long before they had it.

On the other hand....Inasmuch as Iran is a theocracy and not a democracy;  inasmuch as any president merely answers to the Ayatollah, what difference does any of this really make anyway?
