Introducing A Whole New Line of Obama Merchandise

Lately, Obama (the man who claimed to be beyond politics) is doing what all politicians do after securing the nomination of their party, running for the center. To do so, he has had to back peddle on almost every one of his positions, from his Iraq withdrawal time table, to gun control, to whether or not he views Iran as a threat.

A representative from the Obama campaign was a guest on Fox and Friends this morning.  First they asked him what Obama planned to do about the price of gas.

The answer: (spoken with a proud smile) "Our plan is to invest in alternative energy and look to the future."

Translation: Obama plans to do NOTHING about the gas prices.

Then, the Fox and Friends hosts listed a great many of Obama's adjusted positions and asked the spokesman to explain how their "apolitical candidate" can justify all the two faced talk.

The response of the spokesman:  "Oh no. Barrack Obama has remained consistent from the beginning."

"Are you saying Obama has not flip-flopped on anything?"

At which time, the campaign rep merely repeated himself: "Barrack Obama has remained consistent from the beginning."

Oh...Well.... Gee...OK...I guess that settles it. Never mind the facts.  Never mind that his speeches have been recorded and we have heard both sides of every one of his positions. If his campaign rep says his messages have remained constant, then that's good enough for me, especially if he took the time to say it twice!

Sadly, this really will be good enough for Obama's supporters. I'm telling you, they could find out that the guy hatched from a space pod and plans to feed us to the Martians and it will not make any difference to these mesmerized masses that follow their Pied Piper.

Do you have any idea how cultish this man's following has become? As a campaign strategy, people are being discouraged from talking about the issues and encouraged to share their "testimony" instead. "Just tell people your own story, how you RECEIVED Obama." You think merging church and state is a problem? Obama's supporters believe in merging God and state, so long as they can worship Obama as God.

The New York Times reported today that several hundred young men are changing their names to Hussein to show solidarity with Obama's middle name.

There's also a wide variety of Barrack Obama products hitting the market, including, (and I kid you not) Barrcak Obama Thong Underwear!

It's getting harder to write a satirical blog and make these things up because the truth is stranger than fiction. Fortunately, at the moment, I can still offer some Barrack Obama products of my own: Now mind you, even though they come from my imagination today, they may turn up as truth in The New York Times tomorrow:

1) An Obama Vending Machine: It takes your dollar bills and in return, gives you change.

2) An Obama Board Game, (played kind of like Monopoly in reverse) It has many squares derivative of Luxury Tax. The one who loses his money to the government first, wins. Come to think of it, if Obama wins the election, the name of Parker Brothers' other hit game will better describe the way we'll all feel: Sorry.

3) Obama Foreign Policy Bubble Gum: After pushing out enough hot air through your mouth, everything blows up in your face.

4) Obama Toy Army Men: The kid who can pick them off the floor and put them away first, achieves withdrawal and wins.

5) The Obama Decoder Ring: It does not glow in the dark because it wants to conserve energy. But it does untangle special codes. For example, using a number for each letter of the alphabet we can decipher Obama's undercover plan to deal with Ahamadinnejad: Here's the code:   Just match the 26 letters of our alphabet with their corresponding number in chronological order and you can  figure out Obama's top secret plan:  1-16-16-5-1-19-5-13-5-14-20

He Told Me My Prayer Was Not A Valid Prayer

His question came with tears and desperation. He was a college student and he addressed about thirty of his fellow college students, crowded into the waiting area of a hospital.  "I have a question for everybody here?  How many of you believe he can really be healed? I mean, how many of you really trust God to heal him?  All of you?  OK. Well, I think that's the way we should be praying!  No more of this, 'God, we ask for your will to be done.'"

He was referring to Nathan. I had first met Nathan 4 years prior at the University of California in Santa Barbara. Nathan was dwarfed and unable to walk from birth. I met him when he came by our outdoor Christian book table on an electric powered wheel chair. Nathan was not a believer in Jesus Christ at the time.  He attended our meetings and Bible Studies for a whole year before making such a commitment.  His delayed decision was more than understandable. Christianity talks about the hope of a bodily resurrection. If the Bible was true, Nathan not only knew he would walk someday and be full sized someday, he also knew that he would be in this new immortal state  forever and ever. He was not about to embrace such a hope, only to later on have this hope dashed.

In time, Nathan not only became a Christian, he became one of our small group leaders. The guy was friendly, witty and intelligent. His life story was a testimony to all who knew him.

But tonight, I was back in Santa Barbara, after having moved to San Diego. I was back and I was at the hospital because Nathan, my former student and dear friend, was dying. He had developed pneumonia and his weakened, frail chest was not offering a whole lot of help. His parents were there with us. They had known since the day of Nathan's birth that his life might be a short one but all the foreknowledge in the world cannot prepare a parent for the death of their son.

Now we were praying for healing. Not only were we praying, we had several reasons for believing it might actually happen! One of the women in our college fellowship also attended a church on Sunday mornings. She asked her pastor to pray for Nathan.  He did pray and during his prayers, God gave him a vision. He saw Jesus standing over Nathan's bed healing him.

There was something else. Whenever it was my turn to come by Nathan's bedside, he perked up with an energy and vitality that seemed to come out of nowhere. "Bob!" he shouted as loud as his weak voice could, "I want to live!  I want to live!"

"OK, " I said. "Then let's pray. And Nathan, God will heal you. Whether He makes you well or takes you to heaven to live with him, you are going to get better one way or the other."

Of course, that part about how God might heal him in heaven was unsatisfactory to many of my "name it claim it" friends.  This very notion was a lack of faith in their eyes.

I did feel a kind of pressure I had never experienced before. Nathan certainly seemed to be looking to me, his spiritual mentor, to bring about healing but this was something I could not do. Only God could. And yet, between the vision from Meiko's pastor and the way Nathan reacted to my prayers, it was clear that something was up. God was definitely working!

Nathan died that night. He died in his parent's arms and I was in the room. Never before had I seen two parents hold their dead son and I hope I never have to see it again. "Oh, Nathan, they cried out,  "Nathan! Light of our life!"

The group was devastated and some were quick to blame themselves and each other for a lack of faith that had killed their friend. This is the legacy left from our "name it, claim it" preachers: They have achieved the impossible, pouring salt in the wound of a tragedy, they cause the grieving to also feel guilty.

But in the days that followed, we discovered several interesting things.  John, another member of our group who had not been at the hospital, was awakened in the middle of the night. He knew God had awakened him, so he memorized the exact time on the clock.  According to John, God was telling him that something had just happened.  Either Nathan had been healed or Nathan had just died.  It turned out to be the latter, but John knew God had awakened him to let the rest of us know He was still in control. When we compared clocks, we saw that John had indeed been awakened at the exact minute of Nathan's death.

Meiko was the most confused.  She went back to her pastor to get clarification of this vision.

"What exactly did you see?" she asked him.

"Well, I saw Jesus standing over Nathan at his bedside.  Jesus stretched out Nathan's legs and made him the normal size of a human being."

Meiko was quite taken back. She had said nothing to her pastor about Nathan's dwarfed condition. She had merely asked him to pray for a friend who was ill. How could he have known this, if the vision had not come from God?

"What next?" she asked.

"Then Jesus took the fully grown Nathan and carried him off in His arms. I just assumed Nathan had been healed. But it looks like God was instead giving me a vision of carrying Nathan off to heaven."

Yes, God can heal and to this day, I wish he had healed Nathan. But that's a selfish wish.  We all miss him. Nathan may not be too unhappy with his current status. What was Nathan's destiny? How did God choose to answer our prayers for him? By standing over his bed, stretching out his legs, and gently carrying him off to eternity.

America: The Only Country That Is Not Allowed To Be A Country

It’s Fourth of July.  For some of us, this is a day to celebrate the great nation we live in, created at the cost of blood and courage over two hundred years ago.  For others, it's a time to continue bashing America because she just won't get in step with the Global Village, made possible by the brave and ethical United Nations, the Socialization of Europe and her twin sister, the Muslimization of Europe.  They hate America but they will have a beach barbeque anyway. Over hot dogs and beer, they will use their freedom of speech (paid for by someone more patriotic than themselves) and they will slam America at every turn. In some of these countries that they put ahead of America on the "ethics" list, they would be taken out and shot for speaking against the government.  Somehow, they don't seem to notice that their right to criticize America makes America the greatest country on Earth. Earth…Yeah…Let’s not be excited about America. Let’s just be excited about Earth. We are all citizens of Planet Earth. Maybe we will even be invited by the Vulcans to join the United Federation of Planets someday. To be too patriotic is to be divisive. Of course, these same people who do not want to divide up the Earth into different countries, do not seem to mind dividing up American into different cultures. They call it multiculturalism. So let me see if I understand how this works. If you are proud to be an American, you are really a sectarian.  You are part of the problem and not part of the solution. You should be thinking of the entire globe and only the globe.  However (and this is very important) if you are an American citizen but you come from another country, it is perfectly fine to celebrate the country of your roots rather than America. This is not as true if you come from a Western culture but if you are from Mexico or the Middle East or any Third World culture, those countries are very important. Indeed, your parent country should always be more important to your identity than being an American.  Are you catching on? Patriotism is OK if you live in America and some other country holds your allegiance. But if America is the object of your patriotism, it should be traded for a love affair with the Earth itself.

The consistency really does exist. Honestly it does. Politically Correct people are the most consistently inconsistent people I have ever met.

Happy Fourth of July!

Farewell To TV Land, I Knew Her Well

This will not be an important article, but please cut me some slack: Between gay marriage, free speech going down the tubes, the war against Militant Islam and biblical healing, I have addressed many important topics lately. One of the perks to writing your own blog is to vent on those minor annoyances too.

Today's minor annoyance?  TV Land. You remember TV Land!  At least those of you who get cable are familiar with it. It was designed as a kind of television heaven, a home for the classic sitcoms and dramas; Leave It To Beaver, Dick Van Dyke, The Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, and Bonanza, to name only a few.

I guess they must be under new management. Somebody at headquarters has decided that if TV Land does not also do original programming they are not a legitimate network.  They must have forgotten that those of us who watch, do so because we are not that fond of contemporary programs and we look to the clean classic fun of the old days as a kind of escape haven.

So what was the original program they came up with?  It's called She's Got the Look. This is a reality show about women in their 4O's competing to become a fashion model.  Since most models are in their teens or twenties, this shot in the arm for middle age self esteem is being heralded as a stroke of genius and TV Land seems insufferably pleased with itself. Indeed, these are attractive women and if some one in her 40's wants to be a model, all the power to her. Still, that's hardly the point here.

I hate reality shows. I would just as soon have a canker sore removed than to watch one and I freely admit this bias. But let's put that aside. Supposing we stipulate and admit that to many, reality shows are very entertaining. So be it. A big, fat, obvious question remains: What is this program doing on TV Land?  Are they assuming that the same age which watches the old classics will also be interested in older models? I guess that must be it. Oh, how I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when the TV Land execs held their big meeting over coffee and a polished wood table. "That's great, J.B. That's Great! We have a winner!  The people will love it!"

The good news is that this latest act of brilliance is only on once a week. The bad news (dreadful news actually) it that they show a promo for this program during every single commercial break and it is always the first advertisement they screen. This means you cannot watch Andy Griffith without seeing four or five commercials for She's Got the Look.  A scene they like to repeat the most is from one of the gay judges, reminding everyone that he's gay. Yeah, that's a step back into the TV Land of innocence, isn't it?  Oh, and we do not hear the ending theme song for our favorite shows anymore either. When Andy Griffith finishes, the credits are reduced to about one sixteenth of the screen, the music is turned down and an advertisement is flooded over the screen for (you guessed it) She's Got the Look!  Oh, and in between programs, guess what they advertise!  I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

So far, I am doing an inadequate job of describing how this new TV Land makes me feel. Let me put it another way. Imagine that for years you have had a wonderful and beautiful summer vacation home with a green meadow and a luscious stream. One day you return to your beloved paradise, only to find that this stream had become infested with alligators. The water is still water but you can no longer have the steam without these reptilian monsters who look like they just got kicked off the set of Jurrasic Park. I once had a dream like that. It was positively horrible! Maybe God was giving me a symbolic prediction about the future of TV Land.

I don't know who the new exec is at TV Land but I hope he gets fired. He probably won't. She's Got The Look is a hit. How do I know? TV Land keeps telling me so between and during every one of their other programs. Even the Shopping Network is starting to look more interesting.

Kids Make Better Deals Playing Marbles

Have you heard about Israel's latest swap deal with Hezbollah?  Little kids trade marbles and protect their purees better than the Israeli government watches over its people!

In exchange for hundreds of captured terrorists, Hezbullah is going to return about two or three captured Israeli soldiers, soldiers who may even be dead since the Red Cross was not allowed to verify their status. Live prisoners for dead bodies!  As usual, Israel sits down at the table and brokers a really good deal for herself.

Look, I sympathize with parents who want their children returned, even if it is only the corpse for the sake of proper burial. I also realize that to the religious, a burial is extremely important. But when we release these snake like venom, who would murder women and children, who would cut off a person's head at the drop of a hat on the head, then we are only guaranteeing more corpses to be buried. Yes, resting in peace is sacred. Protecting life is even more sacred.

You know what I like about people who make deals with terrorists? Nothing!

Three Tears For Hollywood

It looks like there might soon be a new actors strike. My heart bleeds. It actually bleeds! Here I am, spending $45.00 to fill up my gas tank, and that's just a little ten gallon tank. Most of my friends are paying much more. And we're supposed to be concerned over our performers who think they are the crowned heads of Europe? Instead of a salary of one million dollars, an actor needs one million and  thirty-five dollars?  I'd like to cry.

I enjoy television and movies as much as anyone else, but this one, I will not be losing any sleep over.

Just Because You Used The Word "Equality", That Does Not Automatically End The Conversation.

The biggest news in California these days, is this whole gay marriage thing. Last week, I wrote a rather detailed article, explaining why gay marriage really does affect everybody.

The response I always hear from the left is a quick one liner: “You believe in equality, don’t you?”

Isn’t it funny how the Left likes to claim the intellectual high ground, portraying Conservatives as simple minded, and yet the Left has a whole arsenal of these one-liners, void of thought? “It’s about equality, that’s all!”  Yes indeed. That kind of response isn’t simple minded, is it?

Allow me to critique the charge that those who do not believe in gay marriage do not believe in equality.

I’ll begin with an irony. Many who defend gay marriage, also tend to defend Muslim law in the Middle East.  They are especially sentimental toward the Palestinians. My friend, if you’re that concerned with the rights of homosexuals, how come we never hear you complain about the way Palestinians and other Muslim nations treat gays? In Palestine, gays are arrested and made to sink their heads in excrement. Homosexuals are executed in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Mauritania, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen. And yet, the Left has serious problems with Israel a, country which treats homosexuals with respect.

So much for the subject of hypocrisy. Let us return now to the subject of equality.

Does your concern include the equal right to free speech and freedom of religion? Some of us are not fooled into thinking this is only about marriage. The militant gay activists see marriage as one step in a much bigger agenda, the goal to make it against the law to say that homosexuality is wrong. They want this law enforced, even in our churches. For them, “separation between church and state,” means the church cannot interfere with the state. The state, on the other hand, can interfere with the church all it wants. Doesn’t equality under the law include the equal rights to free speech  and equal rights to practice religion, unhindered by the self-righteous Politically Correct?

By the way, in case you haven’t noticed, homosexuality is not a race and therefore does not need the same rights as a race or culture. Homosexuality is a behavior. Are you as enthusiastic about protecting the rights of polygamists to marry? How about animal rights activists who want to marry their pets? You think I’m kidding?  You think I’m crazy? We already have groups like PETA who believe animal life is as important as human life. How long will it be before somebody connects the next dot?  Just wait!  Just watch!

And how about a much more serious question? Are you paying attention to the pedophile lobbyists? They want their rights too. They want the right to have free sex with children.  Some of them march in gay rights parades, using all the same rhetoric, talking about how beautiful the love is between an adult and a child. Those who don’t see this beauty are closed minded and intolerant, according to groups like NAMBLA.  I guess they figure that if such tactics and such language worked before, it might just work again. Should they be denied this right? Should they be robbed of the opportunity to marry children if they so choose? Aren’t they “equal under the law?” No!  They are not! Why? Because it’s unnatural for an adult to have sex with a child. I know you agree with me. Morally bankrupt as our nation has become, I know that at the moment, at least, you still agree with me on that one. Now then, here’s the kicker: If it’s unnatural for an adult to have sex with a child, why is it natural for an adult to have sex with the same gender? Explain to me how that is natural.

“But the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as an emotional disorder in the year 1973.”

That is correct, although it was done only for purely political reasons. But if you are viewing the APA as some kind of authority, I would point out that this same APA declassified pedophilia as a mental disorder in their DSM4!

Sadly, somebody is going to go away from this article thinking I accused homosexuals of being pedephiles. Of course, I did no such thing and anyone who came away with that idea did not really read the article. They emotionally reacted, but they did not read it. I did pose an important question: Why do we draw the line at one kind of sexual deviation but not another?

Had enough? At the expense of sounding more complex then my liberal friends like to believe Conservatives are, many factors must be considered when discussing this hot potato and merely repeating the phrase “equality” sounds like a mindless mantra. It comes across as bumpkin for the masses.

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.

Note: Some of the points I make in this article are quick reviews from previous articles. For more depth, see the three blogs linked below:

A Biblical Case For Authentic Healing: No, I Don't Mean That "Name It, Claim It" Nonsense.

Carrie was very shy. For her to get up out of her seat at the invitation of a faith healer, in front of hundreds of people, was an act of faith at the very least. Too bad she had to go home lied to. Too bad somebody told her she didn’t have enough faith.

Faith. That seems to be the magic word these days with most of our Christian healers: “God will heal anybody, so long as they have faith.”

Carrie went forward because she had asthma. I went with her for moral support. The preacher laid hands on Carrie and I’ll never forget his words. “OK. I think the Holy Spirit really is working. There may be a set back from Satan. I think what you need to do is just claim it by faith.”

At the risk of sounding unspiritual: What a bunch of whitewashed mumbo- jumbo came out of this minister's mouth!  How do you like these characters?  It you don’t get healed, you’re the problem. After all, they are promising healing to everybody and they will look quite stupid if people come forward and don’t get this marketed product called  healing. Therefore, the “lack of faith” clause bails them out!  If you don’t get healed it’s only because you did not have enough faith!

I have always believed that God can heal, but I never embraced healing ministries with much enthusiasm. I was simply too turned off to all this “name it, claim it” dribble.

This all changed when I experienced a more Biblically based healing ministry in Thomaston, Georgia a couple years ago entitled Be In Health.  Although I owe these people a debt of gratitude, I must confess that I did not agree entirely with all of their theology either. But that’s OK. God can work despite our theology. The apostles proved this. For years they taught and believed that one must first become Jewish (and get circumcised if they were male) before becoming a Christian. That’s about as heretical as any weird theology taught today, and yet the Holy Spirit used the apostles to heal, perform miracles and even raise people from the dead!  So, while in Georgia, I decided to take out the bones and eat the  fish. I decided that if I could at least agree with their main thrust, I could always integrate it into my own theology.

God used these people in Georgia. He used them in a mighty way with me.  As a matter of fact, it was almost an epiphany, the fifth major paradigm shift in my Christian thinking. It seems I had been so frustrated with faith healers who ignored clear passages of scripture where God chose NOT to heal people, that I drifted far too much in the opposite direction. As a theologian, I was guarding the biblical exceptions to the rule so much, I ignored a great big rule: For the most part, in general, God does want to heal us. But not because of faith primarily, because of obedience!

Men and women were meant to be immortal and perfect, physically and spiritually. They were never meant to die or have any disease. Because our ancestors turned from God and turned toward sin, things got fouled up, big time.

In the resurrected kingdom of Christ we will be immortal again. However, the church is an embassy of Christ's kingdom exhibited here and now. When people get healed, it is a foreshadowing of a future kingdom

In John 11:25-36 Jesus, speaking about the future resurrection, is about to demonstrate the truth of his words, by raising Lazarus as a foreshadowing:

"I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will never die.  Do you believe this?"

In Matt. 12, Jesus healed a blind and mute man by casting out the demon that was holding him in bondage. "But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." 12:28

How frequently should we expect God to heal?

It seems that scripture shows healing as a general rule but also shows exceptions where God chooses not to heal.

Ps 103:2-3

Praise the LORD, O my soul,

And forget not all his benefits--

who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases,

Deut 7:15-16

15 The LORD will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you.

Although he was specifically talking to ancient Israel, this certainly says something about God’s heart.  We must remember that the ancient Hebrews used a good deal of hyperbole when they spoke.  Still, even if words like all and every are hyperbolic, and even if the Jews knew healing  would not happen every single time, we should assume that beneath the hyperbole, God is at least saying that He will heal most of the time.  This seems to be suggested by the main idea and spirit of the passages.

Evidently, healing is a New Testament general rule as well:

Matt 8:14-17

When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.  He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

"He took up our infirmities

and carried our diseases."

We see here that according to Jesus, His death on the cross, as prophesied in Isaiah 53, was somehow associated with physical healing as well as deliverance from sin.   This is probably  because of the cross’ tie to the resurrection.  As we noticed in the case of Lazarus, healing foreshadows the day when we will be completely delivered from all sin, evil, and demonic activity, a time when we will live in the paradise of Christ’s kingdom.

Because demons can influence our mind and because the mind affects the body, demons are often (but not every time) connected to our diseases. This is why Jesus often cast out demons while he healed people (Matt 12).  There is an important lesson here: If we spent more time helping people repent of their sins (inspired by demons) instead of merely talking about faith, we might see more genuine healing.

On my radio show, I interviewed an impressive young man named, Darrell. Darrell had leukemia and came to realize, after certain Christian friends prayed over him, that this disease had been brought on due to bitterness. Darrell had a horrible relationship with his Dad and never received the love and nurture that a child needs. Although this was not Darrell’s fault, the bitterness was eating away at him. When he was able to ask God for emotional healing as well as physical, and when he was able to forgive his dad, the leukemia was chased away. I do not merely mean that it went into remission. I mean Darrell was completely healed!  I interviewed him years after the fact!

At the same time, there are others who were traumatized as youth, who have offered forgiveness but are still plagued with depression, low self image, fear etc. In this case, they do not need an extra guilt trip, because we are not talking about their sins. We are talking about horrible things that happened to them. They still need deliverence, but of a different nature.

As evangelicals, we tend to  stress only part of the gospel, that Jesus died to deliver us from sin we commit. But Jesus also died to deliver us from sin commited against us.

It may be helpful to review the original Jewish  concept of Messiah.  Although some messianic prophecies speak of a savior who forgives sin, the popular expectation of the Messiah was that of a warrior who would completely deliver the people of Israel from her enemies and from all infirmities. Jesus claimed to be this very Messiah after reading one such prophecy in a public temple service.

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to release the oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

(Luke 4:18-19 From Isaiah 61:1-2)

Notice the phrase “preach good news to the poor.” This is what the very word gospel means, good news.  Typically, we take that to mean, “the good news that we can be forgiven of our sins.”  True enough, but only partly true.  Think. If forgiveness from sin is all of the good news, in what way is our message a gospel for the poor?  Apparently Jesus is also talking about the good news of being delivered from the effects of sin.

In the case of the poor, the specific sin they are being delivered from is the greed and apathy of a society who cast them aside. But social injustice is not the only evil chain Jesus came to break.  He also mentions blindness.  Although such physical conditions can be blamed on no man (John 9) we would nevertheless agree that back in paradise nobody was blind.  And so, all physical infirmities from blindness to deafness to death itself are ultimately the result of a sin cursed world.  Jesus will someday overcome the entire biological curse of the earth (Romans 8:22-25).  Meanwhile, as a sample and foreshadowing of this blessed day some will actually receive healing ahead of time.

As we continue to study the New Testament, we see that the deliverance is even more thorough.  Jesus not only healed people physically, he healed them mentally.  Sometimes He did both at the same time.

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, the epilectics, and the paralyzed, and he healed them (Matt 4:23-24).

The term epileptic is translated more accurately as lunatic in the King James.

-The actual Greek word is selanuiazomenos, meaning moonstruck or crazy.

Evidently, there is sometimes a relationship between mental/emotional problems and demonic affliction.

As we can see, the New Testament defines gospel as the good news that we will be completely free from sin across the board. This includes the sin we commit and the sin committed against us, be it the evil of men, the evil of demons or the consequences of sin in nature.  Christ means to free us physically, mentally and spiritually from all sin.

“If the cross is about atonement and forgiveness, how does the cross deliver us from the effects of sin committed against us?”

It is the cross’ connection to the resurrection which delivers us from sin committed against us.

"If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him." (Rom 6:5-9)

On the cross, all sin is destroyed.  The resurrection brings about new life, completely free from sin.  There could be no resurrection without the cross.  It is a two step process, destruction of the old nature and creation of the new nature.  The ultimate deliverance frees us from death and returns us to paradise.

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Cor 15:20).

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive (1 Cor 15:22).

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven… Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you ( Matt 5:10, 12a).

I will no longer commit sin against others and others will no longer commit sin against me.  That is the nature of paradise.

Example of Exceptions: (Biblical examples of times God does not heal)

1)  Paul had the gift of healing but also a “thorn in the flesh”.

"To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me.  Three times, I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.  But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in your weakness.  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses that Christ's power may rest on me. (II Cor. 12:7-9)

Note: God has other areas that he wants healed besides physical and he will sometimes sacrifice physical qualities for character qualities.  Yet Paul had faith in God and the power of God

3) Blind man, John 9

For a length of time, it was  not God's will to heal this man until a certain day, so that his healing could glorify God.  It is important to remember that in this case, sin had nothing to do with the man being blind in the first place and lack of faith had nothing to with God delaying the healing.

John 9:1-4

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

4) Job, also, for a length of time, received no healing.

Note: God’s answer as to why he suffered was not: “You did not have faith,” or ,“You did not think positive.”  It was:

Job 38:4-7

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?

On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone-

while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels shouted for joy?

5) The fact that we will all die some day.

Unless God just takes us in some unusual manner, or unless we are murdered or killed in an accident or earthquake type catastrophe, we will die by some kind of sickness.

"The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.  For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice but by the will of the one who subjected it in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God (Rom 8:19-21).

"For as in Adam all die, so in Christ, all will be made alive.  But each in his own turn Christ, the first fruits, then when he comes, those who belong to him.  Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he had destroyed all dominion, authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  The last enemy to be destroyed is death" (I Cor. 15:22-26).

Who can heal?

1) Elders

James 5:14-15

"Is any one of you sick?  He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.  If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

Context: This was  concerned with sicknesses brought on due to sins.  This is one type of sickness and one type of healing.  Oil was cultural symbol for setting people apart for some kind of ministry or blessing.

2) Those called to special healing ministries.  (1 Cor 12)

Can one with the consistent gift of healing heal every time?

On the assumption that one is using this gift in obedience to the Spirit's leading, yes, i.e. Whenever the gift is properly used, it is properly effective. However, there are guidelines:

a) The faith of both parties, the healer and the one being healed.

In Matt. 17 Epileptic was not healed because of disciple’s lack of faith

We do not want to exaggerate the notion of faith as though our faith were some actual guarantee like the “Name It And Claim It” kind of  faith healing promises. When God does choose to heal by honoring faith, He honors even the weakest amount. It is not about how much faith we have.

Luke 17:6

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

Another great example of Jesus accepting whatever faith we have:

Mark 9:20-25

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"

"From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."

23 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."

b) The will of God.

Abraham's faith was based on a reaction to what God had told him.  His wife was beyond the age of bearing children and God spoke to Abraham to tell him that she would bear a son despite her many years (Gen 18).  Abraham did believe God with great faith. However, (and this is very important) it was God’s idea not Abraham’s.  Abraham did not merely “name it and claim it.”  Certainly he may have asked God for a son at various times in his life and I would be surprised if he hadn’t but that is not the same as saying to himself one day, “Hmm…Even though Sarah is unable to have a son, I think I’ll just claim a son any way and have faith to trust that God will do as my faith commands.”

.

3) Can one be healed by praying themselves, apart from the interaction of any elder or faith healer?

Yes, because we cannot put God in a box.  He may do anything He likes and even if He generally ministers one particular way through one particular type of structure, there are always exceptions.

King Hezekiah was ill and told through the prophet Isaiah that he would soon die. After Isaiah left, Hezekiah, all on his own, asked God to heal him and extend his life.

2 Kings 20:1-6

In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover."

Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, 3 "Remember, O LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the LORD came to him:  "Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, 'This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the LORD. I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.'"

Conclusion: As a general rule, God prefers to heal. This has little to do with faith and mostly to do with the casting out of lying demons who have access to our minds and therefore access to our bodies. Although there are exceptions to this rule, we want to stress the rule and not the exceptions. We must always remember that those who follow God but do not receive healing in this life, will still be resurrected and ultimately healed once and for all in the next life, never to suffer again.

In tomorrow’s blog, I will tell the inspiring story of my friend Nathan and the vision God gave us when we prayed for his healing.

Obama's "Clear" Position On Gun Control

Now that our Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 that the words of the Second Amendment actually mean what they say, Obama and McCain have been asked to comment on their decision. McCain gave them a quick thumbs up. Obama's response was a little more on the nebulous side, especially when contrasted to previous things he has said about gun control. Well, I would hate to see Obama foul this one up, lose the election and rob our country of all the change he was going to bring about, so cheer up!  Your ol' pal Bob is going to put his comments together in a way that even a Third Grader can understand!

Here we go!  Obama's position on gun control:

"I accept the clear right to bear arms, as put forth in our constitution. At the same time, I can understand the need for cities to restrict fire arms. On one hand, people have a right to carry guns but on the other hand, they don't and this has always been my position. Nothing has changed. Not that I don't believe in change. I do.  And I will bring about plenty of change when I am elected. Just you wait and see! But my thoughts on gun control have not changed. I believe in guns but only in such a way that I don't believe in them. On the one hand, you can hold a gun in your hand and on the other hand, you can only hold somebody else's hand with your hand. I believe in hands. I always have. I believe in feet too. Not that I have put my foot in my mouth. Only my hand. And if we could reach our hands across the isle and promote unity, there would be no more crime and no more guns. But if you want a gun, you can have one. Just don't ever shoot with it."

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
