And so the verdict has finally
been issued. Gillian Gibbons, the 54
year old primary teacher who moved to the Sudan to help
Muslim children, was arrested in her house at the school compound. This poor
woman has been charged with blasphemy under Sudanese Law. The specific charge? She allowed her 7 year old students to name a teddy bear they were
using as a school project. Wanting to
honor "The Prophet", they chose to name the bear, Mohammad. Little did Miss Gibbons know that under the
Sudanese interpretation of Sharia law, no image may bear the prophet’s name.
Originally Gibbons faced a
multiple whip lashing. I guess the
authorities were on a roll in as much as a Saudi Arabian woman had just been sentenced
to 200 whip lashings for being seen with a man in public. I believe this is exactly what Gibbons would
have received as well, had the media not turned public opinion against the Sudan these
last few days. Instead, she was given the “light” sentence of 15 days in prison
followed by deportation.
Protesting the leniency of the
verdict, thousands of Sudanese, armed with knives and clubs have gathered at
the central square to demonstrate. They
are demanding no less than the teacher’s death.
Score another one for The
Religion of Peace. Why do we keep calling
it The Religion of Peace? Because Muslims
keep telling us it’s a religion of peace, silly. And if you don’t believe them, it’s only
because you’re an Islamophobe.. Never
mind that oppression of non-Muslims goes on in every single Muslim country. You
just march in the same straight line as everybody else and repeat the same
fashionable Politically Correct rhetoric:
Islam: The Religion of Peace.
