An Enchanting Story: Bob's Day At the Bank

The fellow in line ahead of me at the bank kept shouting something to his wife about hurrying up. You see, she was still filling out their deposit slip, but wanting to redeem the time, hubby got in line ahead of the game, figuring that his wife would probably be done by the time some teller called him over.

Well, it didn't work out that way. The next available teller signaled him and instead of handing the confused looking lady a deposit, he explained that his wife was still filling out the form. He asked her if she could just hold on for a minute. One might have thought that this character would just stand aside and let the next person (me) go ahead of him since I actually wrote out my deposit slip before getting in line. Instead, in his zeal to save himself some time, the gutsy little  fellow rudely wasted the time of others in the room.

I'm pretty good about responding properly when situations like this arise. I do not storm out of the room in a huff. I also know it would be wrong to cuss under my breath. Instead, I quietly wonder if this man voted for Obama. I have no original reason to ask such a question, other than the fact that he wasn't exactly amazing anybody with his sharp mind, or keen intellect, or profound wisdom.

A Halloween Costume That Might Have Won First Prize

I've been hearing a lot of talk about who had the most creative Halloween costume. For myself, I usually don't do much about Halloween and I can't even remember the last time I wore a costume. But I'll tell you what I would have done if I were into dressing up. I would have come as the most hideous monster of all; a walking, talking stack of paper, paper so menacing, it threatens to change the very fabric of our existence, more specifically, that two-thousand page health care bill straight from the spooky, organ playing dungeons of Nancy Pelosi. Now you tell me: Have you ever heard of a scarier Halloween costume?

Of course, Halloween candy might just be against the law in years to come, as our government will be telling us what to eat and drink if we want to be covered. So I guess it would be an ironic costume as well.

Yes, He May Very Well Be Doing This Deliberately

Rush Limbagh was a guest on Fox News Sunday this week. In his interview with Chris Wallace, Rush articulated one of those obvious fears that many have thought but few have had the courage to actually speak out loud:  He believes Obama is trying to deliberately destroy our economy, meaning, of course, that by sinking Capitalism, our administration and congress can rebuild us into a Socialist society.

Commenting Monday evening, Bill O'Reilly took issue with Limbaugh saying, "Why would anyone who wants to get re-elected president try to deliberately destroy our economy?"

You ask a good question, Bill and I have a good answer for you. If private sector jobs are systematically evaporated and replaced with government jobs,  more and more people will be dependent upon the government.  Even people who do not like Obama and despise big government intrusion into their lives still have to put food on the table and provide for their families. Given the choice between freedom and security, most people will choose security hands down. Those depending on the government for employment are likely to vote for the same government come election time.

I only have one thing to add: After turning us into a Socialist country, Obama will give a speech explaining that it isn't really Socialism.

How's That For A Lesson On Supporting the Party?

I usually do not endorse third party candidates because, as, a rule, they have no chance of winning and they split the vote, putting the Democrat in office. On the other hand, when a candidate for U.S. House of Representatives is Republican in name only, and when polls demonstrate that a true conservative such as Doug Hoffman ( of the Conservative Party coincidentally enough) has a good chance of taking the wreath, then I don't appreciate Newt Gingrich lecturing us on how we need to support the Republican Party. It always sounds good to talk about a "wide tent" and no, I don't think Republicans have to agree with each other about absolutely everything, but a touch of variety is a far cry from a Democrat merely wearing a Republican mask.

In any event, the discussion has taken a new turn: "Republican" Dede Scozzafava has dropped out of the race and endorsed Democratic candidate, Bill Owens.

Newt, we appreciate your loyalty. Can you come forth now and admit that in this particular case, the loyalty was misplaced? Sweet Dede certainly doesn't share the dedication toward Republicans that you yourself are calling for, does she?

A Story About A Headstone

Peter Gadiel's son Peter was killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Gadiel wants to put up a plaque memorial in his home town of Kent, Connecticut saying, "Murdered by Muslim terrorists."

Now take a wild guess about how the city council responded. In the words of Kent selectman, Ruth Epstein, who helped vote the idea down, "We perceive ourselves as a very warm, loving town. To disparage any one ethnic group is just against everything that we stand for here."

Putting aside the fact that a father should be able to memorialize his own son any way he wishes, there is this other big elephant in the room: The words on the plaque are true!!! Will it offend Muslims?  I'm sure it will, but one would think they'd be a lot more offended that 3000 Americans were murdered in the name of their religion and feel bad that this poor man had to put up any plaque at all.

Well, never mind. I have the perfect solution, one that might satisfy Mr.Gadiel and satiate our appetite for Political Correctness at the same time. Write on the plaque: "Murdered by Muslim terrorists, but remember, Christianity did the same kinds of things 1000 years ago during the Crusades."

New In The Dictionary

On Joy Beyer's new talk show for the CNN Headline News Channel, famous historical author, Gore Vidal shared his lament about the days of the Bush administration. More specifically, Vidal regretted that he had not jumped into his television set while Bush was giving a speech and killed the man. Joy laughed and said, "You missed your opportunity."

Yeah, yeah. I'm sure this was intended as a joke but the hatred they shared with each other for President Bush was not a joke. Meanwhile, can you just try to imagine any Conservative commentator saying such a thing about President Obama, kidding or not kidding?  Is there any chance this side of Hades that he'd get away with a statement like that?  Can you imagine hearing about anything else in the news for literally months afterward?
Do you think for one moment heads would not roll?

In the dictionary, next to the word Hypocrisy, it says "See today's mainstream media."

Of Course It's In There, As We All Knew It Would Be!

The health care bill going before our House of Representatives includes funding for abortion. Hmm...I thought Obama promised that no such provision would be included. Indeed, he insisted that anyone who told you otherwise was a liar. Actually, Obama himself was lying when he said that. At the time of his infamous health care speech, Republicans had already tried to attach an amendment to insure that abortion would not be provided with tax payer money. Democrats voted the idea down and Obama already knew all about it.

But now we aren't talking any more about refusing an amendment. Instead, the bill actually states in so many words that abortions will be taken care of under the new "public option." Will Obama veto the bill due to this inclusion? Time will tell. Am I stepping out too much on a limb to say I'm inclined to doubt it?  Meanwhile, why is Obama not speaking up in protest or at least apologizing to the many Conservatives whom he called liars?

When Social Issues Coincide

At first, the big contributors to Global Warming were car emissions. Years later, we were told that even putting up Christmas lights can cause Global Warming. Then, not too long ago, we were admonished to stop eating meat because that would mean breeding too many cows, and too many cows in the world (How shall I put this delicately?) emit a kind of gas of their own, not to mention all the resources needed to keep cattle alive.

Of course, these small matters pale by comparison to the most recent one. Hold on to your seats, PETA, because evidently, not all of your liberal friends are on the same page. Now, we are also discouraged from owning dogs and cats! According to a new book by Robert and Brenda Vale, Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide To Sustainable Living, good ol' Fido crunches down and laps up approximately 164KG of meat and 90KG of cereal products annually. The land needed to produce such food is 0.84 hectares. Meanwhile, constructing and driving some jeep type mobile in that same period of time requires only 0.41 hectares. I won't trouble you with the cat statistics, but trust me, they aren't much better. Sorry, Sylvester!

I'll bet you think you've heard everything now. I wish that were so. I wish we did not have any more of these self righteous, patronizing exhortations to look forward to, but we do and it will eventually spiral into the most chilling of all. Watch for these health care discussions and related Death Panel debates to somehow intersect with environmental concerns. I can just hear them now: "Do you know how much power and electricity is needed to keep a human being on that respirator?  Sorry, Grandma, but you aren't the only one on the planet and we must look out for the village as a whole. There is a Global Warming crisis, after all."

Were There Democrats in the Bible?

I myself am a Democrat, but I always vote Republican. I do, however, have many fellow Christian friends and peers, also registered Democrats, who honestly believe in the direction today's Democratic Party is headed. Although frequently stereotyped as being part of the Religious Right, you would be surprised how many Evangelical Christians vote Democrat today. True, they part company with their political affiliation on matters such as abortion, but their honest, heart felt convictions about fairness and inequality keep them in "the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy."

Take, for example, the Socialist direction of contemporary Democrats. Often, they will turn to the Book of Acts, to show the Biblical basis for redistribution of wealth:

"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had." (Acts 4:32)

I know my friends who use this scripture are sincere and there is no doubt that they love the Lord. I do not judge their hearts, and who knows? On judgment day, they may be rewarded some great mansion while I serve as their janitor. Having said that, I am forced to point out to my well meaning, zealous Christian buds the difference between mandatory redistribution of wealth and voluntary redistribution of wealth. One has to do with authentic generosity. The other is just downright stealing.

For anyone who cares to study the Bible in context, I invite you to turn to the following chapter (Chapter 5) and read the account of Ananias and his wife, Sapphira. They sold their property and turned the money over to the church of Jerusalem, but this act of "altruism" was accompanied by deception. They lied about the amount of profit, having kept a kick back for themselves. With an intuition from God, Peter accused them of lying to the Holy Spirit. Ananias and Sapphira dropped dead on the spot.

Stop right there!  Before you are tempted to read a scripture passage out of context again, the lesson here is not that the couple was too stringy. Peter only had a problem with their dishonesty.

"Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing?  You have not lied to men, but to God." (Acts 5:4)

See? The money was at their disposal. Yes, the Bible encourages a giving, generous spirit. No, it does not teach mandatory redistribution of wealth. So much for reading politics into a narrative that meant something much different. On the other hand, since Ananias and Sapphira lied, I guess it is difficult to read the story without thinking of politicians.

The Sin We Let Our Pastors and Guest Speakers Get Away With

He was a "big name" speaker. Yes, indeed, a very big name, but I will not mention his name. He was speaking at the church I attended while in college. It was a big church and that is why we frequently brought in "big speakers."

The man had already been preaching for almost an hour when an alarm went off from his watch.. He laughed. "My wife gave me this so that I will know when my time is up."

After this, he turned off the alarm and continued to preach for at least another 30 minutes.

Look, I am a frequent guest speaker in churches myself. I love to talk to an audience. I'll admit it. I have also fallen into the same trap as many of my peers, the erroneous assumption that what we have to say is of such Earth shattering importance, even if we go overtime, few, if any, will care or notice. Indeed, if we are going overtime, it is probably because the Holy Spirit is leading us to do just exactly that, due to the unique and critical dynamics of the moment.

All utter nonsense. I mean, who are we kidding? Admittedly, an extremely interesting or entertaining speaker may get away with talking longer because the people enjoy him so much, they never think to check their watches. But most of the time, an audience would prefer that a sermon end when it is supposed to end and even when the audience does not feel this way, there is also such a thing as honesty. Yes, far too many of us are dishonest about time. The church that invited us may have other things to get done during its service. If we are there as a guest, we should honor our original agreement.  But that is not generally what happens. When asked to speak for 40 minutes, we plan ahead of time on speaking an hour. When asked to speak for 15 minutes, we take 30-40. Not long ago, I was at a conference in which 7 different ministers were asked to lead the audience in prayer. PRAYER! They were not even asked to preach at all. They were instructed to state the prayer request, break people up into small groups for a few minutes, and then close with a prayer of their own for no more than 2 minutes. Instead, (with the exception of one individual) each minister got up and gave a mini- sermon. True, they did preach about the prayer subject at hand, but I think we all know that preaching is not the same as praying. As a matter of fact, two real speakers (men who were actually invited to preach) were scheduled after the prayer meeting, but who wanted to even stay around and listen by then?  Some of these "2 minute prayers" became 10-15 minute sermons. Others went on for 20-30 minutes!

Why do we let people get away with this?  Is it because we consider our leaders to be beyond human failing?  The Bible commands us to confess our sin so I will confess mine: I have often been dishonest with the time allotted. In my defense, I am getting better. I do try much harder these days, and generally, when I go overtime now it is because I truly did get caught up in the moment and forgot to look at the clock. It is no longer something I dishonestly plan and rationalize. I'll never forget the day I attended a missions conference. I and about ten others were asked to take 15 minutes to share about our ministries. I went last, following a long litany of speeches (not one of them even close to 15 minutes)  Before I began, I said to the audience: "My gift to you, this afternoon, is that my 15 minute talk will only go 15 minutes." A miracle, to be sure, probably up there somewhere with the parting of the Red Sea.

Far too often, we assume our leaders and guest speakers are so spiritual, that we fail to recognize the more likely truth: At the end of the day, after much discussion about the leading of the Holy Spirit, we often blame the poor Holy Spirit for things He did not do. Some people just enjoy hearing themselves talk.

This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.

When Good Causes Become Bad Causes

Sometimes movements outlive their usefulness. This is because the objective is accomplished but certain people choose to keep the cause going for any one of a number of reasons: Perhaps it is the pride and prestige associated with a feeling of importance. Perhaps the new leader is a rebel without a cause, the kind of personality who will never be satisfied. And then, since so few individuals ever learn how to think, any loud, passionate, charismatic figure will always have a following. Allow me to list three human rights movements which all began legitimately, accomplished their original stated purposes, and then refusing to fold, demanded a whole host of new rights and/or created untrue, discriminatory, bigoted teaching of their own. As the saying goes, "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely."

1) The Civil Rights Movement:

Good things the Civil Rights movement originally stood for:

-The obvious need to abolish slavery and segregation
-The right of African-Americans to vote
-Laws forbidding unequal housing, hiring, or payment policies due to a person's skin color
-Ending the racist teaching that white people are superior to black people

What the Civil Rights movement has morphed into:

-Reverse discrimination due to Affirmative Action
-Teaching that all white people are racists, and that only white people are racists, therefore African-Americans (indeed all people of color) are actually superior to all white people
-Demanding reparations for slavery in which land redistribution and special taxes on white people will "finally make right" the damage done by slavery

Where I believe the Civil Rights Movement is headed:

-Some extremists will actually insist that until white Americans are the slaves of black Americans for 200 years, we can never be square.

NOTE: Far fetched as that sounds, we are living in an age where nothing ought to surprise us.

2) The Feminist Movement:

Good things the Feminist Movement originally stood for:

-Fair hiring and equal pay for women
-The right of women to vote
-Ending the ridiculous teaching that men are superior to women
-Allowing a woman to marry whomever she pleases or remain single should she please
-Allowing women as well as men to file for divorce in cases where divorce is truly appropriate

What the Feminist Movement has morphed into:

-Reverse discrimination due to Affirmative Action
-Failure to speak out for the most persecuted women in the world, Muslim women, due to the designation of Islam as a Politically Correct religion
-Teaching that women are superior to men
-Teaching that men are all pigs
-In some cases, teaching in college classrooms that all men are rapists. Even husbands, when having sex with their wives, are not truly loving them, but rather, raping them.

The Gay Rights Movement:

Good things the Gay Movement originally stood for:

NOTE: Although, as a Christian, I cannot condone the practice of homosexuality, we do live in a democratic society where Christians and non-Christians share certain rights as citizens. However, since we are talking about a practice rather than a race or a gender, I do not believe all of the same rights apply. Here are some that do apply:

-Abolishing legal codes that outlaw homosexuality
-Fair hiring and equal pay for homosexuals (Exceptions: churches, due to freedom of religion, the military, or any job with children in which the homosexual wants to insist on his right to stand before the kids and make an issue out of his/her sexual preference)

What the Gay Rights Movement has morphed into:

-Insisting that the entire country change the definition of marriage
-Name calling and demonizing of anyone who will not affirm their lifestyle
-An agenda seeking to make it against the law to speak ill of homosexuality
-Teaching that homosexuality is just as normal as heterosexuality

Where I believe the Gay Rights Movement is headed:

-Teaching that homosexuality is actually the norm and heterosexuality is abnormal
-Success in abolishing free speech under the guise of extended Hate Crime legislation (i.e. Like laws already existing in Canada)

Time Magazine, Show Your Hand!

Time Magazine's Joe Klein, wrote about Fox News on October 23rd. While discussing the "hate" that they "peddle" he also wrote: "Some of it borders on sedition. Much of it is flat out untrue."

What did the esteemed journalist, Joe Klein, offer as evidence for this rather serious charge? Nothing! What kinds of facts did he list? None! How many examples of Fox getting caught in a lie were offered? Nip! Zip! Zadda! Nadda!

Kein then went on to say that "Fox News spreads seditious lies to its demographic sliver of an audience."  Actually Fox News gets better ratings than the other cable news networks combined. Neither is Time Magazine doing so well itself these days. Meanwhile, a large portion of Fox's audience are Independents and Democrats. They are not all Republicans. If they were, the Obama Administration would not be so concerned. They know they aren't going to influence Republicans anyway. I could more easily believe in Santa Clause and his buddy the Easter Bunny then consider the possibility that a writer for Time Magazine is unaware of who is or is not successful in the field of journalism. And so, Mr. Klein, could it be that you yourself are the one spreading seditious lies to your demographic sliver of an audience?

NOTES:

1) According to Tech Dirt,  June 1, 2009, Time Magazine is doing such poor business, it may go the way of newspapers and charge for its online edition.

2) According to a national survey from the League of American voters, by the Global Marketing Research Center,  46% of Fox's regular viewers are either Democrats or Independents.

Soon The Mystery Will Be Solved

We're still trying to figure out why that Northwest plane went some 90 minutes past its destination to Minneapolis.  The pilots insist they were not drinking or sleeping or involved in any kind of heavy argument. So what happened? A great mystery, to be sure, confounded by the fact that the black box only has the last half hour recorded which corresponds to the half hour after they had turned around and made their proper descent into the correct destination, thus, worthless information.

Well, only God knows what really happened, but sooner or later it will come out in the open. All I can say at this point: It must have something to do with that George W. Bush!!!!!

It's Your Body And Your Choice...Well...Kind Of.

The Pro-Choice Democrat position:

If you want to have an abortion, it's your body and your choice... Of course...

-We will choose whether or not your body is allowed to smoke.
-We will choose the kinds of healthy cholesterol free, sugar free things you are allowed to eat.
-We will decide what kinds of fruit/vegetable drink your body is allowed to consume instead of that nasty soda.
-We will decide whether or not your body should have public health care and whether or not you will pay a fee if you do not want it.
-We will decide what your body is allowed to listen to on the radio.
-We will decide what your body can read over the internet.
-We will not allow your body to choose what school to send your child to through a voucher program.
-We will decide what kinds of salaries your body is allowed to pay its employees.
-We will decide how much of your body's income will be taxed.
-We will decide what kinds of cars your body is allowed to drive.
-We will decide what kinds of of Global Warming proof Christmas lights your body is allowed to put up around the holidays.
-We will decide what kind of tolerant speech is allowed to come out of your mouth, (which is also part of your body).

But other than these few things...If you want to kill your own unborn baby....Well, knock yourself out, kid!  After all, as we said, It's your body and your choice!
