Pakistani Court Sentences Christian Woman With Capital Punishment

Even as Christians are admonished to be tolerant of Muslims, a Christian woman in a Muslim country faces execution. Read all about it in my latest column for The Washington Times.

Am I Missing Out On Something Extra That God Has For Me?

"Am I missing out on something God has for me?"

That is the concern expressed when Christians hear about an alleged second blessing entitled, "The Baptism of the Holy Spirit."

On this week's Bob Siegel Show, we have an interesting examination into just exactly what the scripture says about this phenomenon.

The program aired on 11-7-10 and can now be downloaded off of www.bobsiegel.net

There's A New Barista Working At Starbucks...Oh...Great!

I've been under the weather lately. Yesterday I (uncharacteristically) took the day off, refusing to teach or even to write in the hopes that I would feel better today. Well, I'm not much better, but here I sit in my regular office anyway, that office being Starbucks. I did look forward to some nourishment before working: A bagel and coffee. The hot coffee is especially soothing when I do not feel well. (Please don't think you need to E Mail me with recipes of healthier items to consume such as kosher chicken soup or special herb blends of tea. I already made myself a cup of tea this morning and enjoyed it about as much as I always enjoy tea.)

In any event, I sure was looking forward to my coffee and bagel. Usually I go to Starbucks for the atmosphere and to study or write. Generally speaking, it matters very little what I buy or eat or drink. Today was different because of the way I felt, so of course, today I was served by a new barista working their counter. A nice guy to be sure and I know I need to be more patient with freshmen employees. God knows I would hate to have his job and God also knows the mess I would make of the whole thing.

When he added up my order on the cash register several times, scratching his chin, and looking gravely concerned, I expected it. When he put my small coffee into a paper cup with more caution than a policeman on a bomb squad, I said to myself, "The fellow is new. He's being extra careful to do things right. Give the poor chap a break."

But the more accurate barometer of my patience surfaced when he repeated my bagel order back to me. "That was a plain bagel, untoasted without cream cheese, right?"

Of course, what I had ordered was a cheese bagel toasted with cream cheese.

I suppose the next time I encounter a new person, I can try my luck of the draw and just give the order in reverse, but there is little doubt that should I attempt such a maneuver, I will experience that rarity of rarities, a new barista who hears me correctly the first time.

By the way, if instead of sending me those healing recipes you want to just pray for my recovery, that would be greatly appreciated. While we can certainly experience quite a catharsis of the emotional state by making fun writing projects out of stories that try our patience, with my physical health, I fear I will need more than a new blog.

Allow Me To Suggest An Answer

Well, it didn't take the main stream media long, did it?  In the wake of last night's historic victory, our new Speaker-Of The-House, John Boehmer is being asked what Republicans will do to create jobs since they didn't care for the ideas coming from Obama and his fiscally brilliant staff of golden goose growers.

My Republican friends, lest you forget the very temporary, extremely probationary provision with which you were sent back to Washington, lest your start faltering less than 24 hours after the victory, allow your ol' pal Bob to supply a pithy answer in the dumbed down style that seems to work for a culture with a memory the size of a single Skittle: "What will we do to create jobs? Nothing! Absolutely nothing. Nothing other than getting the h-ll out of the way!!!"

Should Christians Be Involved With Politics?

Even as Christian rights to freedom of expression are eroded a step at a time before our very eyes, many pastors in America insist that involvement with politics is not the calling of God's people. I COULDN'T POSSIBLY DISAGREE MORE!!!

This important discussion opens The Bob Siegel Show which broadcast on 10-31-10 and can now be downloaded from www.bobsiegel.net.

Please listen to an extremely important program and pass it on to any one who was not planning to vote on Tuesday November 2.

During the second half of the show, we continue a discussion that began last week: Does the conscience display evidence for some kind of creator? Hear a respectful dialogue with two sides being debated.

How Does He Say This Stuff With A Straight Face? Because He's Hoping You Are Just That Stupid!

Seeing the handwriting on the wall, President Obama (who expects to lose at least the House, and possibly even the Senate after Tuesday) is calling upon Republicans and Democrats to come together for the good of the American people.

Yes, those are always the Democratic talking points: When they are in the minority, it means the people want bi-partisanship. When they are in the majority, it means the people have spoken, so suck it up Republicans and face the fact that you lost the election.

In point of fact, I cannot recall a president more partisan than Obama. He refused ALL Republican challenges to his policies the past two years. His title 'Party of No' was dreamed up only because Republicans didn't like HIS ideas. Should they have called him the 'President of No' for not liking theirs? This same man claims that Republicans cannot have the keys to the car because they do not know how to drive. Oh yes, and if they do get in the vehicle they need to "sit in the back." Sweet. Yeah, that sure looked like an olive branch, didn't it?  Then, when he speaks before Latinos, he goes out of his way to call the Republicans their enemy. This from the man who campaigned by saying, "We are not white America or black America or brown America, just America."

Meanwhile, Obama foams at the mouth because Republican Minority Leader, Senator Mitch O'Connell, says his goal is to keep the president from getting re-elected and House Minority Leader John Boehner, says he will work to repeal the policies of this same president. Oh, our poor president! How can two parties work together when one of those parties goes out of its way to say they are trying to repeal his policies? Of course, Obama didn't talk about repealing the policies of George Bush these last two years, did he? Oh, that's right. It was practically the only thing we ever heard him say. And will getting himself re-elected be less of a priority than working with Republicans these next two years? Give me a break!

Obama now has a perfect scapegoat in 2012. "I tried to be bi-partisan, but those mean, nasty Republicans just wouldn't reach across the isle like I was willing to do."  This would be funny if not for the fact many will eat it up with a spoon rather than a shovel and let's face facts: It's the kind of stuff that needs to be shoveled.

Don't Go Away Mad, Nancy, Just Go Away

I guess I should stop making all these dopey predictions. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter whether or not some columnist forecasted correctly ahead of time. Besides, I have sometimes been wrong and when I have been right, they were very easy events to announce ahead of time, so easy, many others were making the same predictions.

OK. I got that off my chest, so here I go. (You really didn't expect me to stop, did you?)  For what it's worth, this one, I have not heard others talk about. It has to do with Nancy Pelosi. Oh, sure, the conventional wisdom is that she will no longer be Speaker-Of-The House after Tuesday because Republicans will win a land slide majority in the House of Representatives. But Nancy is a representative from San Francisco. This means that even as she loses her prestige as Speaker, she will still hold on to her seat as a congresswoman. So far, I agree. Here is where I am going out on a limb. After losing the job as Speaker, I do not believe Miss Pelosi will have the humility to hang around as just another face in the crowd. Watch for her to resign her congressional seat as well. She'll say something to the effect of, "I cannot in good conscience hang around and work with 'the party of no.' I have no regrets.I will always be grateful for the historical progress we made and I did it for the American people, even if time will have to show that we did the right thing."

Just an idea. If it never happens, forget this prediction. I assure you, I will. If it does happen, remember, you heard it here first.

This is Bob Siegel making the not so obvious, even cloudier.

How I Knew I Was Really Grown Up

A couple of weeks ago, the rescue of Chilean miners captivated our 24 hour news networks for....well...for 24 hours on one day and virtually an additional 24 hours during the day that followed.

Yes, it was inspiring and heartwarming to see every single one of the miners delivered from a potentially horrible fate.  I'm not saying this shouldn't have been aired on the news. I'm not even saying it shouldn't have been on a lot. But it did remind me after a while of similar happenings, namely other times when world events went into hibernation in exchange for a popular story, slow (if not void) of additional unfoldings. One example would be the coverage of Michael Jackson's passing. Glenn Beck put it best when he finally returned to his own program (after several days of Jackson inspired preemptions) to say, "News flash: According to our most reliable sources, Michael Jackson is still dead."

The same phenomenon came about after the space shuttle Columbia crash and even during several Florida hurricanes, where there was little new development save Geraldo Rivera standing on the shore telling us how windy it was getting and looking (perhaps deliberately) like quite the brave, macho individual.

While news networks waste our time 24 hours a day, terrorists plan around the clock those same 24 hours. We also face a history making election, battling for the soul of our country. And consider how several key free speech related issues that could change our way of life sit in the hands of the courts, not the republic. With that in mind, I simply am not interested in watching Geraldo bring about the ground breaking, chilling news that hurricanes tend to blow in Florida. Neither did we need to listen to talking heads in between each hour of rescue as the first miners were pulled up one at a time, an hour apart from each other. Yes, for the families of the miners, nothing could possibly be more important. For the rest us: Hmm..It seems one or two other things were going on. After all, the world is a big place and CNN, MSNBC and FOX do call themselves world news networks.

When I was a kid, I hated nothing more than seeing my favorite TV shows interrupted to talk about world news events. Back then, I was angry over the preemption of Lost In Space, or I Love Lucy or The Andy Griffith Show. I guess I've grown up. Now I am bothered when news is canceled for non-news. Oh, by the way, about that hurricane in Florida: It came after all. And...(Hold on to your seats) the following year another one came!!! Details at 11:00.

October Surprise?

My readers know that I dismiss conspiracy theories. Still, I must confess, these sudden, multiple terror alerts, days before the election, raise questions. Can it be only an amazing coincidence? While observing all the back handed maneuvering our president has done these past two years, many of us have been expecting some kind of October surprise without speculating too much as to what it would be. (Putting rationing panels into the stimulus bill so he can technically tell the truth and lie at the same time when he says they are not in the health care bill, serves as just one out of many, many examples to warrant concern about this man.)  I said long ago that I would not be shocked if some kind of "emergency" needed to be pronounced shortly before or soon after the election, once it becomes clear that  Democrats don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of holding on to congress and that Messiah's approval ratings are dropping faster than the flies he is so good at swatting, (even as he comes up rather short at swatting terrorists.)

On the other hand, the real honest to goodness terrorists are well motivated to keep Obama -The-Weakling in power. So they may be creating the crisis for him. I am not saying I can prove either theory. I am not even saying that I am personally leaning toward these theories. I am only suspicious. I hope with all of my heart that such suspicion is misplaced and/or any true terror attempt or government October surprise attempt will fail. But to not at least use our heads and allow a little cynicism into the room would only seem to suggest that we are not paying careful attention to the times we live in. Courage, my friends.
